A town near my work has sirens for a nuclear power plant. I used to work in that plant, btw.

We have one nearby and they test it the first day of the month at noon. Also, I've heard them go off during tornado warnings. It's pretty unnerving, especially at night.

I've lived in Va Beach most of my life and I've never heard any siren go off that wasn't moving in an emergency vehicle.

It's the damnedest thing; the city doesn't have a single air raid siren in it, but every so often I hear literally dozens of them all at once. What's weirder is that as soon as that starts the sun goes dark, all the buildings get coated with some weird rust/dried blood looking mixture inside and out, and all the dogs in the area seem to lose their skin for a bit. Tres bizzare, ne?

..Yup..and they test the fuggen things every day at noon. Not shure what to do if they ever go off otherwise..nobody's told us. And I never did finish digging the bomb shelter in the back yard.

duck and cover won't help you if you are in the epicenter of a nuclear blast, or within a few miles of it. If you are on the outskirts of it or father out though, it may save your life by shielding your eyes from the blast, then protecting you from flying debris. Not to mention it provides a sense of security and safety to those in an area where a nuke is about to go off, since there isn't anything they can do about it.

also, my city and surrounding area doesn't have air raid sirens, but we do have an emergency broadcast system that takes over the TV and radio. Not exactly comforting, considering I am sandwiched between a nuclear plant, hanford, and a chemical weapons storage facility, umatilla.

BEEP BEEP BEEP- Severe weather alert!

The National Weather Service has issued a severe weather warning. The immediate forecast calls for a rain of nuclear missiles, accompanied by mushroom clouds. The temperature is expected to quickly rise to 10 million degrees, followed by the onset of nuclear winter. You are advised to take shelter in your nearest school basement, or any other structure that you think may survive conditions found on the surface of the sun.

There are tornado sirens that I guess could be used for air raids.
Their main use no is to scare my cat when thw city does a siren test.

yes.

we also have a ton of bomb shelters scattered throughout the town in most major public buildings (library, town hall, schools, etc).

That's why dogs are better. They don't get scared at the sound of a siren, they begin to howl along with it.

Works with fire engines, too.

We got sirens, but there is also a public address system in the same unit. It's really weird when this woman's voice echoes around the city telling you that this is a test and not a real emergency. We had a tornado warning last summer and the voice came on and kept saying, "this is a real tornado warning...this is not a test."

I highly doubt they are meant to be air raid sirens, but they go off during tornado warnings, fires, and what not.
