Or any special favors for that matter
It gets you snickers when the drivers get together and make fun of the pretentious big tippers that think they'll get something special when, in reality, it buys you nothing. If the store manager discovers that drivers are playing favorites by rearranging the delivery schedule, they're fired.

This is not to say that an occasional tip wasn't appreciated during bad weather but it was never expected.

I delivered years ago near a huge university. It was quite an experience. A few dorm girls tried to tip with non-negotiable currency.

How do you figure? I use to order Pizza Hut 5-6 times a month, I tipped stupidly well, and after the people who worked there started to remember it was me when I ordered. I'd always get extra shit, and really quick delivery. At the bar up the street I'd tip the bartender more than most and she would go out of her way to help me over other people. I'm sure the extra shit I got didn't even come close to being worth it for how much I'd give out in tips. But any place I eat or drink at, I tip well. And any place I frequent enough to be remembered when I walk in or get a delivery. I get better service all around due to my tipping habits. Are you saying if I tip the bartender the same amount the drink was. She's laughing at me? That could lead to an extra $25 a night for her from me. People who bust their ass working for tips aren't going to laugh at people who tip very well and on a regular basis.

Can it? Yes, Will it always? No.

Most everything is delivered in the same order it is taken. A delivery driver cannot make the front cook the pizza any faster. It is rare that they take more than 2 orders out at a time. With which it is pretty obvious which one they should deliver first. Tip constantly and you may get some preferential treatment, but we're talking like 5 or maybe 10 minutes if you live really far away. Some added bonuses like cheese and parmasean with every order without asking, but they can't do much more than that.

The big thing to remember with a delivery is that a tip should be based on distance as well as the price. Also, the more complicated a delivery it is, the more you should think about tipping a driver that deilvers it quickly.

For those of you who think a driver should NEVER be tipped because you're already paying for the service need to understand that tips are the only reason anybody semi-intelligent will deliver. The extra money is what makes it worth their time to do the job. There are many people out there that could not understand how to take more than one delivery at a time without getting lost. I've seen people that have to write down every single street, turn, and cross street down on paper in order to get there without getting lost. Who do you think would be left to deliver if nobody tips? You say tips are earned not expected? Well duh, but these people earned it and you don't give it. If that happens consistently, then you will get the drivers that don't earn it.

It's a shitty job, i always give the guys a break and tip even if its a major chain.

To all of the people who don't tip the pizza guy... I hope you thoroughly enjoy that $2-3.

I delivered pizza for 2 years. We knew who the big tippers were, the avarage tippers and the shitty tippers. IF i had 3 pizza's that had to be delivered guess who was 1st 2nd and last? Even if i have to drive by the 3rd person's house to get to the 1st he STILL is not going to get it.

EVERY manager i knew knows what is going on. is he going to fire a driver for doing it? HELL NO. they understand.

Make with the stories former delivery man 😀

I tip well all the time. Never regretted it.

You'd have to dump the food on my head to not get a tip, and even then, if it's a funny incident, you might still get a tip. 😀

i was lucky. i worked at avery busy Pizza hut near a college (NIU). It was not uncommon for me to have 3-5 delivery's at once on a busy night. i made pretty good money doing it.

i am against tipping for every little thing. BUT delivery drivers have to pay for car repairs and gas to do the job. so i always tip 2 bucks per pizza.

Here we go again.

Just to reiterate, tips are earned not expected.

Tips are expected for basic service...the 'earn' thing is abused.

Fact is a good tip didn't get your food their faster, but most delivery people have learned not to expect much as too many poor people are out there.

It's sad these deadbeats use not tipping to allow them to eat out.

Most will think they never see that guy again, but driver's talk and at many places your address goes on a list. Expect your food to be fucked with from anything from having the floor vents blow on your food to one getting rubbed out into the mix.

However the same people not tipping were probably the same flunkys giving piss poor service to begin with an they themselves suffering from crappy tips.

I was fortunate to work for a privately owned establishment that would blacklist an address if they did not tip the driver.

I've been reconsidering my tipping for Pizza. For restaurants unless the service is awful i always tip 20-25%, but pizza.. It goes from $9.99 pizza to like $16 to have it delivered, what the hell? I'm considering not tipping for pizza delivery anymore (I only get papa johns or dominos). I can't justify $17-18 for one average pizza.

What was the rule for new customers or unrecongnized ones? Like you got a call for a big tipper, medium tipper, and new\unkown tipper?

big tipper first then whoever is closer is what i did.

i loved being a delivery driver. i would make on avarage $12/hour on tips (i usually worked friday and saturday evenings). Since i worked teh college area as seemingly random mentioned sometimes you would get tips/payment in other ways. Around the college dorms/frats/apartments it was not uncommon to have a nealry naked or naked person open the door.

I get delivery on a regular basis from a local burger/chicken fingers joint around here. They know me, I give around 20% tip, and I typically get my food in 25 minutes or so. Used to be 45. On the other hand I'm also pretty regular at Dominos and haven't seen any such decrease. Correspondingly I give them around a 15% tip. *shrug*

I bet you're fat

Haw haw, people that eat burgers, chicken fingers, and pizza are automatically fat!

Nope! Unless you are a regular customer and they know you and your address.

I did the pizza thing for about 6 years and there were a few people and addresses we know and they certainly got a little better service, but nothing fancy. Especially from a national chain where everything is done by the order in which they come in.

Perhaps a local place might treat you different.
Same with me. In my neighborhood all the delivery folks knew who the good and bad tippers were.
There was a distinct difference in quality of service.

Wish I were a mod on that comment. At least we know you are an asshole.

Thing is with a tip, it's not really about the dude remembering you or guaranteeing better service the next time...it's about covering the service for the job as long as it was adequate.

Good service scales up...but the service has to be down right terrible for that level of cost to go much below 15%.

The main justification people try to play is demanding Four Seasons type service in an Outback type restaurant. A $15-20/plate meal is hardly top shelf...these restaurants are keeping costs down by staffing accordingly. If one expects no wait what-so-ever, they should expect to approach $100/plate (not counting drinks) and then perhaps have 2 or more servers for just their table.
