FFS, does nobody in here bother to read?

My mistake... I read it as you were taking an antibiotic in the form of a topical cream (like Bactroban), which would probably be of limited effectiveness if the infection goes significantly deeper than skin level.

No worries, it was my mistake for not being clear as I was unaware there was a topical antibiotic. Seems silly why one would use one for anything.

Nearly two days now. Getting better? Getting worse? Moving towards your wiener? Pics of wife's leg?

It's (mupirocin/bactroban) prescribed for impetigo, a staph infection in the skin.

severe mrsa

Helena.MRSA-1.400.jpg

No one mentioned what's wrong with this picture?

Why is someone's exposed healthy skin anywhere near that severe MRSA infected skin? Is this a bad made for TV zombie movie screen capture or is this the dumbest nurse on the planet?

Because the exposed skin is healthy.

You probably come into close contact with MRSA several times a day.

Looks to me like no change, if slightly worse. I'll be going back in to the doctor as soon as they can get me in tomorrow morning.

Well shit.....

After completely clearing up and being gone for over 2 months, it's coming back today. WTF!

It's also swelling now and the doc is closed. I may have to head in to urgent care. You can see it's now stretching to the lower right of the pic too. Can't see in the pic but the redness connects between them and it is puffy through that area.

i've never heard of a topical antibiotic, but either way.... shrug.
Neosporin, and it's offbrand alternatives.

Surprisingly, my roommate has longterm MRSA in her legs the docs have not really been that successful in treating. One of the times it broke out into an open seep I had her apply off brand neosporin to the entire open surface twice daily, and it got extremely angry: irritated and burny and itchy as all hell, and eventually it scabbed over... and the infection and wound has looked far, far better since and has stopped spreading toward her feet. I'm not saying topical OTC is good for everyone, but it seems to have really set the MRSA spreading back, it has not inflamed since and this has been the longest she can remember it ever not being inflamed at a stretch.

I put the stuff the doc prescribed on it and it seems to make it worse. I'm going to clean it off and leave it be till tomorrow and see how it looks/feels. If it's any worse until then, it's ER time.

I had some bites on one of my legs a few months ago, that looked just like that Gill. The culprit was either a small flying flying beetle at dusk in my car or a spider in my car. The flying beetle also bit me behind the neck several places, but only on the leg did it swell up like that and discolor around the bite and not go away for about a month. I went to the doc and took some antibiotics for it shortly after it happened because I was concerned about MRSA too. I ended up using various topical creams and ointments on it with 1% hydrocortisone in them. One I liked was in an applicator like they use for sports injuries.

I've tried cortisone creams, they do nothing. The doc prescribed a corticosteroid which is supposed to be "industrial strength" cortisone cream but it too seems ineffective.

She gave me a prescription and the cream last time and it went away, I'm just curious as to why it went away for over 2 months but now it's coming back. What set it off this time?

Looks like a spider bite I had once. Didn't go to the doc to confirm, but got better after a couple of weeks. In the meantime, my calf ached quite a lot.

Edit: didn't realize this thread originated 2+ months ago. Are you sure you weren't bitten again?

There's a clear mark at the bite origin, which is inflamed again and can be seen in the pic. (Red dot inside pink blob)

EDIT: I guess anything is possible though.

Hmm, now that I think of it, it does remind me slightly off a bite/sting I got while cycling to work. Never saw the culprit, and at first it merely hurt like a bee-sting. But, the thing stayed around for quite a while. And started to hurt quite badly as well, for weeks, while staying visible for longer.
The afflicted area looked smaller though, only about finger-nail sized. I currently can't find a scar, but that doesn't mean anything, as my skin is generally pretty shitty.

As for topical antibiotics - I had some flying around for a while, to combat under-skin infections due to acne. Currently use some to stick up my ear, when the skin in there gets infected for no reason at all.

So yeah, a repeat bite could look like that - or maybe an isolation pocket popped in a bad way and restarted the infection.
