Just to enlighten my fellow Asian-Americans or other curious parties:
Paraphrasing from Timothy Fong's Monterey Park: The First Suburban Chinatown:
The myth of Asians as bad drivers arose from the city of Monterey Park (my hometown).
Often derided as the Accident capital of the World in the lates 70s and 80s, the number of
accidents was disproportionately high in the city due to the traffic from the 710, 10 and 60
freeways spilling onto the local streets that cause more local accidents.
Because Monterey Park is an Asian majority city, the accidents were of course blamed largely
on the local residents.
In short, this is the myth that continues today. Story time over 🙂
Apologies to RalphKradem for hijacking the thread 😀
