I want to connect a SATA hard drive to my computer, but my power supply is old and only has peripheral connectors. Is there a peripheral to SATA power adapter?

The same reason as to why we can't have a standard "plug" for the front panel connectors :disgust:

For SATA drives, at least, they wanted a lower-profile connector. This can be important for slim 2.5" drives used in laptops.

No idea on why they felt they needed a new connector for PCIe cards. Maybe it's specced for more current than a regular molex connector? But then you wouldn't really be able to convert between them...
