Does the use of an "alternate" spelling bother you?

I've been reading a training manual on thermodynamics and fluid flow for work and this manual uses "gage" instead of "gauge". I had never seen "gage" used before and, at first, I thought it was misspelled until the dictionary told me that "gage" was just an alternate spelling. But I just can't get used to seeing gage. It bothers me and I want to write in a "u".

Is the use of "gage" widespread in the MechE world? Maybe I've been sheltered all these years as a computer guy.

EDIT: Dear Mod,
Please accept my apologies .. I thought I clicked "new topic" in OT. My bad. Thanks for moving. :)

Nah...alternate spelling is fine with me, as long as alternate math is ok too...2+2=5 or 6 depending on how my day is going...

Basically, if there's an accepted british spelling that is being used, I'm okay with it. Aluminium, colour, and grey.

Good point. I guess the "u" in gauge is quite British. Wonder why those don't look right to me, but gauge does.

I alternate between grey and gray. For some reason, I've never attached myself to either of the spellings.

That's pretty terrible. Gage IS technically an alternate spelling of gauge, but it also has definitions of its own.

Alternate spellings don't always bother me, but that one would piss me off.

Heh, my first job out of college was working for a British company with an office in Atlanta. I ended up picking up their use of the 'u' in words like those. I was confused as hell when they started saying Zed for Z though.

If I ever put "12 gage Steel" on an engineering drawing, i'd probably lose my job and lose my chances of every getting a PE.

gage = dumb
tyre = dumb
all of the british spellings with the extra "u" = kind of dumb... I'll never do it but I accept that other people do.

yeah, I always corrected gage to gauge. I've mixed up grey and gray all the time though.

gage in reference to steel is quite acceptable and correct.
