For those who dont know Northern Virginia and much of DC got bad ice storms last night and the roads are slippery this morning. Way too many nimrods out there with 2 wheel drive hoopty's. Also, too many people with pseudo SUV's trying to act like they're real SUV's. Not the least of which was the Navigator. Saw a dude spin out and hit the curb, hard. Looked like everything died when he did it and he couldnt get the engine started for about 15 seconds. I asked him if he had a 4 LO or Low 4 mode on his shifter or a button on the console. He said he thought he did. I suggested he use that instead. Did not suggest he take his sorry ass home. But maybe I should have.
Anyway the incident got me thinking about how Virginians dont know how to deal with bad weather. Also got me thinking I dont know much about fancy cars other than they suck ass except under ideal conditions.

Do the impact sensors on Lincolns also kill the engine? He didnt damage anything, but he didnt hop right up on the curb like my truck would have. He rammed straight into it and very hard.

Even low end cars have inertia switches, and other safety devices, etc.

He probably didn't follow the correct procedure to get the vehicle to start.

Wait, 15 whole seconds?

At least. Then he had the good sense to drive up on the median (big wide grass patch) and we got out and chatted a bit. I asked him about the engine not working and we agreed maybe its some kinda safety stop feature. Then I told him about Low 4.

Well, the inertia switch has to be physically reset. So if he didn't find it and reset it to get started, then it wasn't that.

If the vehicle just restarted, it may simply have been flooded during the gymnastics.

Problem is in the DC area right now there is little to no snow so everybody thinks it is ok, its only ice.
Fed Gov is on a 2hr delay and I was the only person in the office for at least a couple hours.
I put tarps on the Chevy last night but even then I did not cover up the hood/headlights so my headlights would not pop up. Had to hit them a couple times to break the ice.

I just get a big jug of windshield fluid and pour it over everything.
Works great. I lol when I see people out there chipping away for 30 minutes. They make all kinds of scratches and dents.
Of course, thats much better than the average fool who drives around with obstructed windows.

I wouldn't just go pouring that stuff everywhere. It's mostly methanol, which is highly toxic even in small quantities. It causes blindness.

How about everclear or some other liquor?

Probably needed to shut it off completely first before trying to start it again.

Also, under the described circumstances I see no reason why you would want to shift to your low range gearbox.

Umm.. 4 low would not help him in this situation. You suggested he just travel slower and increase the wear and tear on his driveline.
