It has been called "Luna" and "Celestine" by various civilizations, but I believe the current "proper name" is just "The Moon."
Not to be confused with the generic term "moon."
It can also be used interchangeably with "satellite." I recall a recent APOD of "Earth's Two Moons" which was a shot of The Moon and the ISS (or maybe it was Mir) both in the same piece of sky.

I believe the actual name for The Sun is "Sol" and that's how you'd find it labelled on celestial globes and other star maps.

"Vic" . . . Vic daMoon. :)

Called Luna by the Romans, Selene and Artemis by the Greeks, and many other names in other mythologies.
Luna: The personified goddess of the moon. Later she is identified with Diana and Hecate. Her temple, on the Aventine Hill, was erected in the 6th century BCE but was destroyed by the great fire under Nero's regime. She is equivalent to the Greek Selene.
Here is it called "Luna"
Luna is the only natural satellite of Earth and is one of the darker objects in the solar system. Its rocks are mostly dark gray and it reflects less than 15% of the sunlight that falls on it. If Luna was as reflective as Earth, night would be much brighter than it is, when Luna is in the sky.

There's no need to change the name of the Moon, just cram it through people's heads that planetary bodies orbiting planets are NOT called "moons". They're called satelites. OUR [Earth's] satelite is called the Moon.

And yes I realize that this point has already been made in this thread but I'm reiterating it. :)
