Does the Earth's Moon have an official name?

Beau

Just out of curiosity, does anyone know if the moon has a name other than "the moon?" Every other known planet's moons have names, why not ours? Why is ours just the generic "Moon?"

Luna?

That's all I've been able to find, but that still isn't all that fair because anything that is related to any moon is considered "lunar". I don't find this to be unique enough.

Perhaps we should start a petition to give our moon a propper name. It seems only right to do so. Also, Earth should be capitalized in all instaces reguarding the planet.

how about an ATOT poll? 😉

be sure to include "Bob"

all cool stuff is nicknamed Bob 😀

I guess cause we Earthlings named all of the moons (but discovered our own moon first, of course) the Earth's moon doesn't need a name. It's THE moon.

😀 Acutally, I'm typing up a petition to post at PetitionOnline.com as we speak(type). Probably pointless, but hey, it's worth a try.

What about certain ancient civilizations? Does anyone know what names they called "the moon". There has to be something better to call it. 😱

Then we cannot call all of the other massive hunks of stellar rock, orbiting other planets "moons." It is disrespectful of our Moon.

"Satellite" is the generic name, not "Moon." I.E., Earth's satellite is called "the Moon."

Right, but anytime we refer to any other planet's satelites, we generically call them a moon.

That's because we're stupid. 🙂

Well that's not the point 😛 The point is that we need a unique and propper name for our satelite.

Our moon does have a proper name: The Moon. 🙂 Good lord, we've been calling it that for hundreds of years, why change it now?

Luna was the goddess of the moon (greek?). The word predates its use in scientific circles and is in fact the origin of the word lunar. All the satalites are named after mythological names, greek/roman names predominate but all cultures had a god/goddess of the moon. So when you refer to Jupiter you are refering to a planat in this solar system but the name derives from the god Jupiter, just as the moon is called Luna.

It has become generic. I'm not saying change the name (which apparently is Luna), all I'm saying is that we need to show respect toward it. It is our only moon.
