I buy alot of gas from Costco. If not available, I buy from Shell/Cheveron/76/mobil. I won't usually buy from Arco because I don't have cash on me and don't get 5% back on ATM (more than offsets their ATM fee and price difference).

I have found that a certain Cheveron near me has given me some bad gas before. Filled up from empty, gas mileage and power was down the entire tank (was doing a long distance trip)... I don't go to that particular station. Wasen't the nicest looking Cheveron, maybe the filtering or tanks were on the out.

the only thing you really have to worry about, afaik, is the mom and pop stores because they won't necessarily get their gas refilled as often, meaning sediment can build up in the fuel reservoirs/tanks and be pumped into your car. otherwise, the same fuel truck might stop at several competing stations to deliver the same gasoline :)

When gas comes into your city, it isn't segmented by brand. It comes in one big pipe where everyone fills up from. Rarely these days do you even seen company specific trucks.

If all the gas comes out the same pipe, is it the same? Yes.

The difference comes where the pour the additives in and that's where you pay more as well. Chevron markets the hell out of Techron so you'll pay more. You can argue the worthiness of the additive all you want, but the gas it's poured into is all the same.

gasoline refineries spit out unflavored 87 octane. this is fed into the pipe system ready to use. like a bank account, the dollar you put in is not the identical dollar you get out. on the other end of the pipe, some is sold as is and the rest is sent to gasoline university. detergents, octane boosters, and anything else is mixed in here.

normally, gas additives are a complete waste. you can't really go wrong with the big brand gas stations. usually, their filters are going to be changed more often - cleaner gas and the speed is very noticable when filling a 30 gallon tank every 2 days

This is not true. I did a test for 3 straight weeks.

I tried Sunoco, Lukoil, and Exxon, Sunoco lasted much longer.
I work roughly two blocks from my apt and I swear Sunoco would last longer about 1-2 days.

My brother is a Ford mechanic who knows what he is talking about, and said that Shell is the worst for leaving residue etc.

Arco is the worst one I never get it anymore.
I got a fuel system related CEL once after refueling at Arco.
