does 'paycheck to paycheck' basically mean having no savings?

No, but I can relate to that. When I was at my first rental on my own, I got this $90 deposit check from the power company. It had been a year and it just came in the mail totally catching me off guard.
I was giddy for days over that:p

"do i really need to spend $20 on a remote farting machine??" ;)

Definitely!

We're building up a 3 month emergency savings fund to prevent us from losing our asses if one of us loses our jobs.

After all our bills, food, clothing budget, car maint budget, etc. we have $700 left each month. That typically goes into savings our towards projects for our house, such as the $2,000 we're spending having our failed attempt at a lawn killed, tilled, and hydro-mulched plus some landscaping.

I had to work a part-time job to keep my head above the water when I was making $12/hour and I consider myself to have minimal expenses...don't even have cable tv.

My SO and I have a pretty good sum saved up right now, tis a shame we will use most of it for a down payment on a house this fall.

still don't see how you do it and you don't live that far away. The cost of living is sky rocketing here. I'm paying significantly more for rent then when I was living in the good section of Phoenix.

I don't live paycheck to paycheck but I couldn't go too long without a job. Now if the house was paid off that'd be a different story. I'm currently throwing all extra funds at that which seems to be a good plan to me.

Here is how:
Income: disability SSI&SSDI: $657 a month.
One room of a quad: $400 a month all utilities included.
medicine and other needs: ~$150 a month
food: ~$100 a month
total: ~$650 a month.
Take into account that now I finally was able to discearn the location of the local food stamp office (ugh so hard to find out for me) and am getting $46 a month in that as of this month, now the belt is loosened a bit for other expenses such as clothes I need.
With Chapel Hill having free bus transit, it's very tight but it works.

I've built my monthly budget after unemployment benefits that the state provides. PA gives up to $539 a week for unemployment. So, my monthly budget is $2k. I make WAY more than that a month, so the rest of my money gets sent into ING and 401k. This way, if i ever am unemployed, I can use the six months of unemployment to find a new job WITHOUT dipping into savings. I just won't be able to save during that time period. I also have another 6 months of expenses in savings.

Truthfully, I live a pretty comfortable life. Though, could i live without the 56 tv or the quad core computer or going out every weekend? Sure, but what fun would that be?

yeah my rent is double yours, plus add the car payment and insurance. Forgot about the public transportation in Chapel hill.

After I get a bit saved up I will be moving out of the city, RTP, and into one of the smaller towns like Holly Springs or Hillsboro. I'll miss the conveniences, but not the 800+ a month for a crappy apartment.

CC Debt

We use a method that keeps nearly all of our non debt items below 25% of our income. This allows great flexibility to where we can funnel funds to. But we would be dead in the water now if it wasn't for the help of family members during the rough spot.

We are broke as hell and it's getting worse by the week.

I'm a sales rep for AT&T as well and business is definitely getting slower and slower each month. Used to take home $3.5K a month or more... Now I'm lucky to hit $2500. I make $11.63 an hour though so not nearly as bad as you.. What market are you in?

Fun times... but that's the life of an engineer.

No it's not, you suck at finance. I know plenty of engineers, shit there are close to a dozen of them in my family and they never go paycheck to paycheck. They are however, all cheap motherfuckers who are frugal as hell.

Maybe he means train engineer. You don't have to lay into him so hard.

Man, what a sweet gig that is:
1) Throw throttle lever
2) Sit on ass
3) Profit

And you get to use that horn.

LOL someone doesn't know much about train operation.
First, though this is a small detail, there is a button you have to press every 30 seconds if you don't change a control or a very loud alarm sounds. this is to keep the train under a concious and alert operator.
The next is the big thing. If you make a single mistake in the operation, its quite possible you just lost your employer from a few thousand to a few million in cargo and/or equipment, and lost your job.
Then there are very, very strict rules you must obey on tracks, much more strict then rules of public highways, and the fines for breaking even bending them are incredibly steep.
And then they do constant tests for drugs and alcohol and such, even more severe in this then the commercial trucking enforcement is.

The opportunities for getting fired are all over.

Fun times... but that's the life of an engineer.

How is that the life of an engineer? I am an engineer and I don't live paycheck to paycheck. I think you should figure out where your money is going.

We live paycheck to paycheck. We do have a few grand in savings, but I don't even consider that a buffer since it is earmarked for the summer when my wife doesn't get paid (teacher). Once summer is over that savings account will be at 0.

Yup and if you were really good it used to be easy to take home 6 figures... Only very few left in the company that do that now

I take everyone far too seriously. It's a known character bug!
Patching it has proved to not work, and I am not ready to roll out a new version of Jaqie!
