My office wants a vote. My boss said something about next monday and half the office thought it meant the 1st (the first monday coming up) and the other half thought it meant the 8th (the second monday coming up). What do you think?
 
Uh, since you are in this week next monday would equal the 1st. So unless half your office is in some kid of time warp to next week already, next monday couldn't equal the 8th.
 
"Monday", "This Monday", and "Next Monday" to me all mean the 1st., but if someone said "next monday" I would ask them to clarify.

If you're in the first group, you should take solace in knowing that half your office is retarded and your job should (hopefully) be secure.

I'm also kind of split and have always been confused by this too, but I've noticed a trend where it seems once you have passed a specific date (Monday) of any particular week, if the monday immediately in the future is to be cited for any reason, it would simply be like "on monday we'll be doing blah blah". A connection of future action plus simply stating the exact day of the week typically refers to such day that will be coming up.

Next typically means skipping one, though some serious confusion can happen when you are on a Tuesday of a week, and you say "next monday", because the very next monday is quite far away as it is (in general terms).
If it's actually Monday, and you say next Monday, it is almost universally understood to mean the upcoming Monday.

Saying "Next Monday" on a Friday, would lead me to believe they are not referring to the Monday immediately following the weekend.

But really, every single person has a different use of the fine details of the language, so any good leader would skip such vernacular and simply state "Monday the 1st" or "Monday the 8th". 😉

Also when this is brought up in the first place, if anyone is even slightly unsure about the specific date, fucking ask the question when it is brought up. I cannot believe the office is simply voting instead of just asking the boss when the question came up.
 
Next tends to be added, at least where I am, when talking about something happening in the following week. So next Monday would be the 1st.

This Friday, or on friday would be the Friday in the current week. While next Friday would in the following week.

The problem is that it's a Monday... When most people say "this Friday", you're usually still in the same week and the Friday coming up is this Friday, "next Fri" would be the week after. But in the case of Mondays, it had already passed for the week. I don't think it's proper to say "this Monday" as it had already passed and shouldn't be used.

"This" has to refer to something relative to time, I always took it as "this weeks ___" or "next weeks ____" So since today is Fri, it's improper to say "I need you to come in this Monday". I already came in. It's also improper to say "this Saturday" when today is Fri because you should be saying "tomorrow".

This is generally how I think.

Just depends how/where you were raised.
 
In the United States, "next Monday" means "the Monday of next week."

Today that would be March 1.
On Sunday that would be March 8 (because weeks begin on Sunday in the US)
 
this must be regional, there's no confusion that next monday means monday of NEXT week and this monday means monday of THIS week.
