It's harder to be shallow when times are tough, so I would say yes, but it depends on how bad the economy is. There will always be bad songs put out, no matter how bad it gets, though.
 
Based on this year I'm going to say no. It depends, however, on how long it takes the economy to affect music.

But if you're asking about song writing, yes. Sully Erna once said something to the extent of "there's nothing to write about if I'm happy..."

He's almost got a valid point though. There are bands worth mentioning since then. Actually a lot of bands, but I feel like when it comes to a lot of the top 40 stuff now, it's mostly shit.
