How about ditching the Kyro2 and getting something which uses 8x agp? As much as I loved my old Kyro2 (I have a FX5900 XT now) it appears it's pretty much hit and miss whether it will run on 8x motherboards.

i can't do that, since the only other option would be a radeon 9600 pro or higher and those are overprice still i think..and no to geforce ..i wasn't impressd with their 2d quality...i'm getting the asrock..hopefully it will work.

My point exactly - if the Kyro is strapped to 2x AGP, a 4x/8x AGP mainboard that is in its right mind will refuse to fire it up.

The reason why it doesn't work has already been explained... but here is my experience.

I have a Kyro2 card and a nForce2 board. My Radeon was being RMA'd so I had no other video card so I tried my Kyro2. Simple answer, didn't work at all. But it didn't kill either the card or the board. I'm pretty sure it did fit, I would have remembered if it didn't fit.

That's because stupidly enough, the Kyro2 cards do have the key notches of a "universal" AGP card, claiming to be compatible to 4x/8x boards just as well as 1x/2x boards, even though they are configured to be limited to 1x/2x.

Just got my asrock k7s8xe from newegg and got revision 3. booted up the kyro2 and so far its been rock solid and the sound is excellent. have not overclocking it yet but will.

Nope. Won't work on any Intel chipset since 850/845, maybe earlier(don't recall which was first).

When you are interested in getting the most out of your asrock the best place for information and the performance bios you will need is:-

I think you will find the Asrock motherboards to be very stable, I've so far owned 2 K7S8X v1.0 (for my main pc and my second pc) and I then upgraded one of them to a K7S8XE+ for my main pc and I've never had problems with any of them!

I usually only buy Asus motherboards but when I heard they had started releasing budget motherboards under the Asrock name I had to get one and ended up with three. 😉

Incase your wondering what kind of performance difference there is between the official and unofficial bios for the Asrock I did an article for my website:-

For extra stability get the official bios from the Asrock website but for a nice performance boost with overclocking options then get the unofficial bios instead.

Damn! I guess I'll have to look for an 8500 then. Would an AIW 8500 be good for a HTPC for a few years?

ok i think i'm set for now. i'm running my 1800xp at 2100ghz at 200fsh at stock vcore. i think this one is a keeper for now until amd64 becomes cheap

I'll be upgrading to amd64 as soon as Asrock marketing send me a nice new k8s8x! 🙂
