Does Horse meat taste bad or something?

It's a heck of a lot harder and more expensive to raise horses en masse than it is to raise cattle, sheep, pigs, etc. They require more care and are harder animals to deal with. This leaves only the private sectors as a way to get meat, and horses coming out of the private sector are probably old and somebody's pet/work horse/show horse. Additionally you can't kill food animals by injection, and so the methods of killing them are less than humane. Be honest, wouldn't you freak out if somebody was going to shoot a bolt through the head of your pet dog and then hang it up on a hook (regardless of whether it was dead at that point or not) and skin it?

So horse meat isn't the food of choice in the USofA.
 
Horses are more useful for glue and leather... and the occasional whipping they get at the races...... Can't use a chicken for any of those
 
Horse meat is quite good if prepared properly. It is a very dark meat and has a very good flavor and texture. My mother bought it once when we lived in the Netherlands because it looked so good and was relatively cheap.....not speaking or reading Dutch she didn't know what it was. We found out after eating it but it was really pretty good.
 
You can find some places that sell it. There's a eruopean food store in my city that has/had some of it. I tried it once. It's rather tough meat, thick texture, even as lunch meat. Does not come apart as cleanly as some other meats. Mostly, it has a very salty taste to it. All in all, not the most pleasent meat to eat.
 
I'm sure the quality of the meat would vary from breed to breed of horses, and be affected by the age of the horse.

Ok, I can understand dogs... but rabbits? WTF has a rabbit ever done for anyone? One time this rabbit lead me down this hole, the next thing I know this crazy ass cat is talking to me, and some crazy ass queen is chasing me around tryin' to kill me. If I could find that rabbit again, his ass would be pot pie.

Never had horse meat, but have eaten deer meat, frog legs, buffalo, rabbits and squirrels and liked them
