Ended up buying a $25 Black and Decker jigsaw. Got a 2x2 foot sheet of wood and ended up not using it. I found a better slab in the basement of my building. I couldn't find speaker carpeting, so I went to a few audio places near me, and they didn't have it either.

Going back to Home Depot to get a carpet that kinda sorta would do what I want. When I am done, I'll post pics.

Mine does. It's like 20 cents a cut.

Esh - I can usually get at least 2 cuts per sheet for free

They do cut to specifications, but I think I recall a sign saying they will not do precision cuts.

Yep - expect up to a 3/16" varriance

They would not let me do it, or even help them.

I don't think anyone should be surprised about that. To say the liability issue is huge is an understatement

Lowes & Home Depot will usually be happy to cut a piece of plywood, so long as you're not asking for angled cuts (their saw is basically going to rip a straight line, and I doubt you're going to find anyone willing to do an angled cut.

I've never been charged for having plywood cut. :\

For the carpeting, suggest you either check out their exterior carpeting (like you'd use on an outside porch), or their carpeting remnants (pieces left over at the end of a roll, too small to sell for a room.....and usually marked down from what the per foot price was, when it was on the roll).

did you look into local auto stores. they have car carpet which is pretty similar.
I used truck bed liner on a speaker box once before, it turned out well.

They will cut wood for you. But don't expect them to know how to run a saw. I was standing there nearly laughing at them trying to cut a sheet of ply with a circular saw. They would not let me do it, or even help them. Idiots. It ended up about 1/2 in out of square and not a straight line. Even after i had to show them how to use a measuring tape.

With their panel saw? That is quite a feat. With a $5000 panel saw I likely could cut dead on square, blindfolded.

All lowes/hd I've been into invariably do cut wood and invariably have never charged me anything. Lowes even will cut tiles if you buy them there, though only straight cuts and I don't know how well.

i'm sure it depends on who's working there. Lets face it, many such employees can't even put on sticky tile correctly let alone cut wood. Its like expecting Best Buy employees to know anything about the products they sell.

Lowes and HD both will. Bought a table top at IKEA (was cheap!) and had it cut at Lowes.

You have to go find the old guys. They seem to be very knowledgeable. For example, there is a guy who works in the tool section at my local Home Depot who used to be a professional carpenter building furniture. He really knows his stuff.

Understand that, but they should do a bit of training then, they would have cut the cord in half and probably a few fingers off without my detailed instructions on how to use a saw.

no no, it was "broken". they could not figure out how to adjust it to make it square. i even showed them. lol...

just a circular saw and some saw horses.
