Does having a 9-5 suck?

I'm just curious. Is office space pretty accurate in describing a 9-5'ers life? Movies usually stretch things but alot of 9-5'ers agree/empathize with the movie (my friends from college definately do).

Maybe I've just misread the whole world and people like spending 70% of their waking hours working for someone else. But the stereotype is that it's a 'grind' where people do the same thing day in and day out.

Also why do people work 9-5's if they hate them so much? And if that's the only way they can make ends meet, isn't that a lightly camouflaged form of slavery?

Your thoughts?

I have a 2-10pm

IT SUCKS LONG AND HARD:|

I am goign to be shifting to a 9-5 soon. My life right nwo is ridiculous. Grades suck, have no free time...urgh...can't wait to get back to normal.

saab 9-5s are crappy automobiles and i imagine people who have been around them would agree they suck

Oh, and have fun philosophizing on the validity of spending 70% of your life in an office.

There is nothing wroing with it really, but realize that it'll leave you poor, and might even get you killed.

*taps nose*

I'm 12noon - 8pm. Works out ok for me. I get to stay up late and still get my 6-7hrs of sleep. 4am now and I don't work till 12noon, I can still squeeze in 6 hrs of sleep.

I cannot wake up early in the mornings so a 9-5 would really suck for me.

To answer the OP:

1. 9-5 is a myth. If you work 9-5, that's 8 hours a day with no lunch break. Add the hour lunch break and it's 35 hours/week.

2. I would hazard a guess that a very low percentage of white collar employees work only 40 hours a week. The average is probably closer to 45 and of course a lot of people work more than that.

I work roughly 7am-4pm and my average work week is probably 45 hours (I know the two don't really line up but some days I come in at 6:30am and some days I leave at 4:30-5pm).

Slavery? Puh-lease. If that's what this generation thinks, we're all in a heap of trouble. You have free will my man; if you don't like it, start your own business, or find a non-traditional job. I happen to love my job but I know it's probably not the type of thing I'll be doing in 10 years.

there is no 9-5 per say. Most places don't let you on the clock while you eat lunch, so add another 30-40 minutes. I work a 6a to 4p. Factor in the commute its 5:30 to 4:30. And people wonder why I'm so tired when I get home.

guess I'm lucky - live 10 minutes from work (quick train ride), work 9 till 5.30 so leave around 8.30 and home by 6

For whatever reason. "taps nose" makes me think of Kingdom Hospital. That club the doctors had. They didn't actually tap their nose though, they "blew" their fingers out using their thumb in their mouth.

9-5s suck, but not because of the hours. A lot of Office Space hit home very well. In particular, how his cubical was right next to a huge window but they built a cubical wall in front of it. And how his boss would treat him like crap in the nicest way possible.

Depends on the day and client, but being a public accountant, the hours can be as bad as 7am to 12am during busy season (January to April). I wish I get overtime, then it might be worth it.

When I was in college I thought that Office Space was just hilarious... then I began my career and you find yourself relating to Peter more and more. It is scary! Everyday I dream of finding a job that is my passion.

Working in business looking at a bunch of numbers that do not really mean anything all day long isn't fun. It keeps the world going I guess...

Just make sure you have something to work toward to. This is mine, hopefully in 2 years: http://www.bootsnall.com/rtw

I'm just curious. Is office space pretty accurate in describing a 9-5'ers life? Pretty damn close.

Also why do people work 9-5's if they hate them so much? TO make good money, so you can enjoy things outside of work.
And if that's the only way they can make ends meet, isn't that a lightly camouflaged form of slavery? It's not the only way to make ends meet, but it's a decent way to live a comfortable life. Is it slavery? No... We can quit at any time and become a working at home (in a camper), full time social security drain.
Your thoughts?
Sure, we could try to start our own business and work for ourselves... but the hours are longer, the pay is mediocre and 95% of new businesses fail. We just play better odds.

Yes, but I work a 6:30A to 3:00P now and it fully rocks. The only thing I could think would be better is a 11A to 7P day.

I leave at around 6:45 to get to work at 8, come back at 6-7, depending on traffic. That's 12 hours away from home everyday. 🙁

we have 4 shifts, 6am - 2pm (best shift, but hard to wake up at 5am), 7:30am-3:30pm (manager's choice), 8:30 - 5:30pm, 9:30am - 6😛m (best for overtime and lazy people)

Which is why I clicked...

Yeah, I thought it was the car, too, but then I realized that I would never want to own a car named 9-5.

Yes. I actually worked briefly as an office furniture installer, and there were lots of places where I installed, to the "designer's" specification, tall cubicle walls that blocked every worker's view outside the windows. I should see if any of those companies have made f***edcompany.com.

And Peter's boss in Office Space represents the lack of people skills common to too many bosses. Gary Cole played that part well.

I don't mind a 9-5 because it finances my lifestyle. I make sacrifices in 30% of my life to live better the other 70%.

ah it frustrates me. The work is ok, but it's the fact that you're forced to form relations with people whom you'd never normally talk to. Bing in IT, I have to help these people and form working relationships, etc.

It's true about managers doing Sweet FA but gettting paid 5 times as much. I've also noticed, however, that many employees waste a lot of time, for example chatting or even posting to online forums.

I've worked in a 9->5 for about 10months, and have now applied for the RAF for a lifestyle change 🙂

I worked 8:30-9:00 yesterday. No, not a half hour.

The up side is I get more days off, but I was pretty tired last night.
