I haven't heard any of our so called "religious leaders" chime in on this one.
Seems whenever we have a hurricane or tornado in the US at least one of them says God is punishing America for anything from homosexuality to fluoridated water.

So, is God punishing the Icelanders? And for what?

No, the people who say things like that are bobblehead idiots. Disregard those fools as you would any hate-filled lunatic.

The basic mistake of the OP and your post is that Christianity is not defined by the lunatic fringe. It is not about the Pat Robertsons and Jerry Faldwells (you forgot Westboro Baptist by the way). If anyone thinks that is the case, they are quite mistaken and have taken an extreme and indefensible position. Any attempt to argue otherwise, no matter how feable, is simply blind rhetoric spouted by an extremist.

Hey, I agree with you there. ;)

All I'm saying, is that people like Dawkins show up b/c the majority, as you call it, has done essentially nothing to separate themselves from the lunatic fringe. What I mean, is that they seem to allow the lunatics to te the public voice of x religion. And yes, this isn't limited to Christianity.

I think it's the case in well, pretty much any discipline, field, thought, religion...whatever, that the least educated and most obnoxious pupulists of _x_ group are the most seen and heard, as the appeal to the greatest numbers of people (the ignorant, populist majority).

The media, especially with the internet being so prominent, does very little to filter out the noise. The noise has now become the message, it seems.

Sad.

Luke 12:1-5:
Now on the same occasion there were some present who reported to Him about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mixed with their sacrifices. And Jesus said to them, "Do you suppose that these Galileans were greater sinners than all other Galileans because they suffered this fate?
I tell you, no, but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.

"Or do you suppose that those eighteen on whom the tower in Siloam fell and killed them were worse culprits than all the men who live in Jerusalem?
I tell you, no, but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish."

Well I believe Dawkins is the equal and opposite of a Pat Robertson. He lives to deride anyone who disagree with him, and some follow him like he's the Pope.

All sides have their lunatics :D

There is a relatively smooth gradient of religious fanaticism that starts at the top with the Jerry Falwells and Pat Robertsons of the world and ends with the barely religious folks who think just as badly of the fanatics as any atheist would. Each "layer" of fanaticism is buttressed and supported by other layers that are relatively close to them in belief. The fringe crazies sit atop the fanatical christians who don't quite buy everything they're saying, but mostly agree with them. Those sit atop moderately fanatic christians who don't buy everything the fanaticals believe. Those sit atop the barely fanatical, who make up the upper level of the rank and file christians who are in the majority. The truth of the matter is that the fringe crazies could never exist without the climate of acceptance created by the supporting layers below them.

Most average christians will say that they have nothing to do with these lunatic outliers, but they make them possible nonetheless.

yes, that's pretty much what I've been saying. :)

Those that follow Dawkins so stringently aren't so much scientists. They tend to be atheists that really only learned about him through his recent anti-religion campaign. he's been around for decades, basically stirring up a lot of criticism within his chosen field, actually. Some praise, deserved, but lots of criticism--also well deserved.

No no no no. We have a weather making machine. That's all!
Well, maybe an earthquake machine. But we definitely don't have anything else!
