Does China produce anything that is not utter crap?

China will build whatever, however, AMERICAN companies dictate. I am simply amazed how many idiots love to hate China, when its AMERICAN companies that pay to have their products built there... The Chinese will build an iPhone however Apple tells them to do it, or else they go somewhere else. Thus far, they seem to be doing a decent enough job of it.

If anyone on this forum needs something else to hate on, take a look at all the American companies that are shipping your jobs over there, and then selling you the same product, for the same price, all the while increasing their margins.

I blame bleeding heart liberals for thinking uneducated factory workers should make $20+/hr with full benefits.

well no, in a way you go there you sell your soul. go into joint venture with the government to build your own competition, deal wtih countless subcontractors and corruption and the government rigging things because they know you are trapped, along the way control is lost. http://hbr.org/2010/12/china-vs-the-world/ar/1

Well I wasn't really referring to companies in the "high-technology" area, more or less the bulk of what Americans, which is stuff like toys, injection molded plastic products.. i.e. low tech stuff. Basically, when you go to buy a potato peeler and all of them say "Made in China", and you think to yourself, "yeah, its $1.99, but couldn't we still make this here for $2.99??".

I read the article, and somewhat knew that already from reading about the US car companies trying to sell electric cars over in China. Basically, the Chinese want access to competative technology from the auto industry in an effort to bolster their own. Any manufacturer that commits to this, has no right to cry later on, when the Chinese auto industry becomes like that of the Japanese auto industry... or the Koreans. Both took European and American design and blatently copied them, and now look at them. In the 50's, GM thought it was cute that a little company called Toyota, wanted to build a car... They all but gave them engine blueprints, never thinking that they could one day be a competator.

BTW, Ace Broadcasting Network FTW

its a bit different when the government is in on it. then its more mafia style extortion..."it would be a shame if something were to happen..." type threats galore.

My girlfriend sure is lovely, aside from her, Chinese food is pretty damn good.

Oh and Jackie Chan movies kick ass.

I have reservations about flying with any asian airline due to their quality control and possibly ethics. It may not be true but that's what I perceive about asian airlines when I think about China.

I also wonder if china made vehicles go through stringent crash test and have a rating system like we do in the NA.

Chinese food is awesome and does offer great variety. Asian cuisine puts a smile on my face, but you still have to be careful where you eat.

I notice at restaurants it is customary, even though the utensils/chopsticks/bowls/cups have been washed, to use hot water to rinse them one more time before using them.

wrong. steel and aluminum maybe, not CF.

The big picture is pretty clear: around 95% of the bikes sold in the U.S. are made in China or Taiwan by a handful of manufacturers of which Giant is the largest.

Generally speaking, low to mid level bikes are made in China and mid to high level bikes are made in Taiwan. The exception is carbon; many manufacturers use Chinese manufacturers to make their carbon frames – even their high-end racing frames.

Trek still makes most of their carbon fiber frames in Wisconsin.

Dont blame China for making shitty products. Blame the corporation for trying to cut every nickel off the production process. China will make anything to whatever specifications they are given.

Just the high end cf frames. as of 2006 trek has moved a majority of its production overseas. I never said China made shitty products. I own several chinese made cf racing bikes... I trust my collarbone on them.

Comp parts and gadgets are mostly made in Taiwan. As much as China would like to think Taiwan is theirs, it is not really part of China. This fact pretty much negates all who who used as examples, iPhones, TVs, etc (unless of course they are going to get all China-nationalistic on me). Again Taiwan != China.

I don't know anymore. Sure Taiwan has a huge electronics and tech industry - but most of the consumer level products are getting their manufacturing sent to mainland China.

As this is a PC forum, why not look at the big PC component manufacturers:
Foxconn - TW HQ, bulk of production facilities in China
Asustek, Abit, Giagbyte, MSI - all the same. Most of their manufacturing is in mainland China.

The higher costs of doing business in Taiwan mean that higher-end products or more specialist products are those products that are tending to stay in Taiwan. The lower-cost, mass market stuff increasingly getting outsourced.

I strongly recommend ANA (All Nippon Airline). New and clean airplanes, tv on every seat (even coach section), sweet/nice and pretty female flight attendances, decent foods.

I also heard good things about Singapore Airline and Cathay Airline but I haven't have any experience with them, yet.

one thing to possibly worry about is if it is ever required to mass produce like in WW2, would america still have the ability to quickly switch to a war time economy/production powerhouse, which was the main reason for its advantage back then.

i think these days they figure you will fight with what you have.
modern weapons too easily target large manufacturing facilities, they would all be dust.

While the Pentagon downplays China’s rollout this week of what appears to be a jet fighter designed using sophisticated stealth technology, military experts are warning that the aircraft – reportedly capable of besting America’s F-22 in speed and maneuverability – could pose the greatest threat yet to U.S. air superiority.

been reading various reports on this ranging from "they're 10-15 years behind" to "OMG CHINA!"
