Valid point, although I still think OSU will beat Florida ... too bad about the UCLA game because I think the only team that could have taken OSU out this year was USC.

the difference is that Florida played 11 bowl elligible teams and boise played 2 ... boise would have not surivived in a real conference ... but i do think a play off would be the best

San Jose St, Oregon State, Hawaii, Wyoming, Utah, and Nevada were all bowl eligible.

Lets face it, if the 1991 Miami Hurricanes could win it, so should Boise State.

I agree that USC had the only shot at beating OSU. Though they would have lost.

If Florida does win...my initial thought is that Boise should get a piece of title. But I see OSU winning by 10 or so.

I haven't been stunned this much from watching a game since I watched Villanova topple Georgetown over 20 years ago. I know different sport and game, but I'm talking about how long my jaw stayed dropped.

You're right though, the NCAA does not recognize a national champion. The AP poll might not be part of the BCS anymore, but they still award a national title.

The BCS was formed to try and make it more clear who the REAL winner is, but like what happened in 2003, it didn't happen. USC still won a share of the national title. The BCS wasn't designed to be the clear cut winner of the national championship and nobody else could split it, it was to make it so that split championships were less common.

The Utes played arguably a much tougher schedule then BS played this year, with wins over four bowl elgible teams (Texas A&M, New Mexico, North Carolina, and Wyoming), a win over PAC 10 Arizona, and a dismantling of Pitt in the Fiesta Bowl... they finished 12-0...

USC won that year (by throttling OU in the Orange Bowl and finishing 13-0), but to all the people in here (I'm pointing at you BlancoNino) that believe that undefeated = NC over nondefeated and that schedule strength doesn't matter, shouldn't two undefeated teams be split champions?

I don't consider Wikipedia an organization able to grant National Championship either. It falls under the same silly misconception that the current system allows for a split national championship.

Again, I'm not saying the current system works. But this is the way it has worked since 1998.

I'd love a playoff system. Then again, without one I can put more weight on conference championships and not even pay attention to the BCS title game since I know it's a sham anyway.

Many of the big caliber conferences do not want to tackle the better WAC & MW teams for fear of getting an upset.

Those conference is unknown and as has been shown; some of their top teams have a nasty habit of playing much better than expected.

Utah and Boise love to act as the underdog and show up the naysayers.

Nope. USC is ALSO officially considered the national champs of 2003 by the NCAA record book.

Link? This NCAA Championship History page doesn't even list Division I football. It was my understanding that the NCAA doesn't ever officially recognize a division 1 football champion.

The "Official 2006 NCAA Divisions 1-A and I-AA Football Records Book" lists "National Poll Champions" Which includes the BCS champions, the AP champions, and several other polls and rankings. It lists both LSU and USC in 2003.

a few thoughts...

Boise St. is a very good team, but let's be honest, they are a 3 or 4 loss team in the Big 10 or the SEC, 2-3 losses in the Pac 10 or ACC - minimum.

Oklahoma is an average team with one great player - Bob Stoops should be the coach peope are picking on, not Lloyd Carr. Yes, he's lost to OSU 3 out of the last 4 games, but those OSU teams are some of the best OSU teams they have ever fielded - how many players from last year's team are in the NFL now, and how good is this year's OSU team? He lost a Rose Bowl to Vince Young's Texas team that was a very close game, he's a good recruiter, and for the most part UM's players stay out of trouble. If that gets him fired, then there is something wrong with college football. UM will be a top 5 team at the start of next season, even with a few early departures expected.


IF OSU loses to Florida, then my final rankings would be Florida 1, OSU 2, LSU 3, Boise St 4, Wisconsin 5, USC 6 (assuming LSU blasts ND like they should)

My final NCAA football thought of the year is this:

You can have a kickass team with great offense and D but unless you have the playbook and the balls to use it in big games, you're going to get spanked. Helps to make adjustments at halftime too, instead of doing the same thing that didn't work in the 1st half.

Okie battled it out with a terrible Oregon team. And couldn't defeat a WAC team with a soft schedule.

Yes, Boise State is good, but come on. OSU? Florida? The talent gap is too big.

It does beg for a playoff system though! Bring on the playoffs!

Create a 4-team playoff and all we'll be doing every year is bitching & complaining that the #5 team got shafted.

Create any larger playoff system and all we'll be doing every year is bitching & complaining that the playoffs last way too long and there are too many opportunities for injury (which is more significant than in the NFL because these players haven't been paid yet).
