Haha funny OP, aren't you the one who was literally crying over Batman Begins and how it was a trashy movie or something? I remember you individually responding to every single remark against you while looking like a complete ass, but OK, it's one of the silliest concepts of human nature. =/

Are you saying you believe one thing and teach your kids another? Or that later in life when your kids can understand the difference between obedience and decorum, they will understand why you told them not to do/say things that are widely regarded as offensive?
Please clarify.

I am the one who posted that my opinion of Dark Knight is not good. Some people seemed to be offended by my supposition that anyone CAPABLE of being entertained by such a film does not posses a set of critical intellectual skills that I can hold any respect for.
What was I offended by?
I can tell you right now that I am not in the least bit concerned with anyone's thoughts here. If someone does not like me, it's no skin off my back. So in this instance how could I possibly be offended by anything anyone said to me in that thread? I only responded to fire with gasoline. If anything I invited every one of those remarks, and it's not as if they were unexpected responses, so again I fail to see how I was offended.
You seem to want to turn this into pot calling the kettle black situation, but there is no animosity on my side of the fence, so your logic is faulty. Did you like Dark Knight?

On the internet, no. But if you sat down next to me at a bar and started trash talking things that I cared about I might take offense.

The older I get, the less offended I become by anything.
The amount I get annoyed by people seems to be increasing at an alarming rate however.

So you get a rise out of controlling people, and you suppress basic instinct so no one can challenge you on it. Offense isn't cultural. Alligators take offense if someone impedes on their territory. It's instinctual. If I kicked you in the nuts right now, would you be offended? Anyone who's human would, otherwise I could just kick your nuts to mush and you wouldn't even react.

i didnt say i dont understand the difference between socially acceptable behavior and offensive behavior, i said i have to force the reactions to teach my kids the differences. i dont have much of a conscience (my kids are my conscience), i dont get offended at anything, nothing really grosses me out or makes me not able to eat. i do, however, understand that there has to be social consequences to some actions/ words, so i teach by example instead of telling them not to say/ do that. kids react and learn from emotional responses as well as they do from other forms of teaching, why would that be a bad thing? at least im aware of my own shortcomings and not passing them on to my kids. wish i could think of a decent example, but its been a while since they did something really deserving a reaction akin to being offended.

being offended and physically harmed are two different things.

I'm not going to see any of your, so I can treat you like good buddies or treat you like shit, it wouldn't matter either way and in the end every post gets lost in the archives anyway. It means more in person because its face to face interaction. Things would offend me more in person without a doubt, weather I knew you or not, I'd still care what you thought to a great extent than the internet, and then an even great extent if you were someone I knew.

Not really. Offense in the modern sense is just a heightened form of instinct. If I challenge you in a debate about something you strongly believe in, the emotions that are produced are quite similar to those that would have been produced had I challenged you to a death match and you accepted.
In much the same way, many sports are actually more advanced and arguably "civilized" versions of violence, much like the gladiatorial combat in Rome.
The only difference between my challenging you in a debate and physically harming you is the imminence and magnitude of the threat.

I'm not talking about assaulted. That is a physical thing. I'm talking about offended. That is SOLELY an emotional thing. Believe me, if you come kick me in the nuts, I will NOT be offended, but I will be pissed!
Next slippery slope please!
P.S. I do not control anyone but me, and no one can control me but me. The same holds true for you. I do not attempt the impossible, so you are wrong in your assumption.

The point I am making is more clear when I have help. The conversation itself helps me refine my position. I may even change my mind. That is what a forum is good for. Also, it could be a book. Would you just come and read it? Helping me write it is more fun. Also, your responses are more varied than I could possibly anticipate. All in all, I think this is the best way to discuss something like this.
So you know, you are doing an excellent job.
