I am the one who posted that my opinion of Dark Knight is not good. Some people seemed to be offended by my supposition that anyone CAPABLE of being entertained by such a film does not posses a set of critical intellectual skills that I can hold any respect for.

What was I offended by?

I can tell you right now that I am not in the least bit concerned with anyone's thoughts here. If someone does not like me, it's no skin off my back. So in this instance how could I possibly be offended by anything anyone said to me in that thread? I only responded to fire with gasoline. If anything I invited every one of those remarks, and it's not as if they were unexpected responses, so again I fail to see how I was offended.

You seem to want to turn this into pot calling the kettle black situation, but there is no animosity on my side of the fence, so your logic is faulty. Did you like Dark Knight?

Please clarify.

i didnt say i dont understand the difference between socially acceptable behavior and offensive behavior, i said i have to force the reactions to teach my kids the differences. i dont have much of a conscience (my kids are my conscience), i dont get offended at anything, nothing really grosses me out or makes me not able to eat. i do, however, understand that there has to be social consequences to some actions/ words, so i teach by example instead of telling them not to say/ do that. kids react and learn from emotional responses as well as they do from other forms of teaching, why would that be a bad thing? at least im aware of my own shortcomings and not passing them on to my kids. wish i could think of a decent example, but its been a while since they did something really deserving a reaction akin to being offended.

Most people have no chance of offending me because I don't give a fvck. The only people that have a good chance of it are my g/f and closest friends and family.

I agree with the sentiment of your statement. I don't think anyone can control the emotions of another, but I do think that people CHOOSE to feel particular ways, including offended. I do think the nature of the choice is complex, but a choice none the less.

So you get a rise out of controlling people, and you suppress basic instinct so no one can challenge you on it. Offense isn't cultural. Alligators take offense if someone impedes on their territory. It's instinctual. If I kicked you in the nuts right now, would you be offended? Anyone who's human would, otherwise I could just kick your nuts to mush and you wouldn't even react.

Rather than tool with us why don't you just get to your point. My time spent on the internet is for my own entertainment. I'm not going to see any of your, so I can treat you like good buddies or treat you like shit, it wouldn't matter either way and in the end every post gets lost in the archives anyway. It means more in person because its face to face interaction. Things would offend me more in person without a doubt, weather I knew you or not, I'd still care what you thought to a great extent than the internet, and then an even great extent if you were someone I knew.

No no no! I wasn't implying you lack anything here. I get your attitude. You did raise a rather interesting point though and I was trying to coax rather than beat it out of you. That is; you seem to feel that YOUR attitude is the problem/abnormal and you choose to teach your children something else. What makes you feel this way? Who is to say that it isn't all of the vast majority of people who are easily offended that are wrong?

I don't find jokes that rely on any stereotypes, but especially racial ones, to be funny but I try not to be "offended" per say as long as I can be reasonably sure that the person telling the joke is genuinely just trying to be funny and not actually prejudiced.

Not really. Offense in the modern sense is just a heightened form of instinct. If I challenge you in a debate about something you strongly believe in, the emotions that are produced are quite similar to those that would have been produced had I challenged you to a death match and you accepted.

In much the same way, many sports are actually more advanced and arguably "civilized" versions of violence, much like the gladiatorial combat in Rome.

The only difference between my challenging you in a debate and physically harming you is the imminence and magnitude of the threat.

What really does offend me is that one of my female co-workers will sometimes take off her shoes and the smell is really well, offensive. She hides her feet under the desk but man, I can tell when they're off. I just want to slap the bitch. :disgust:

Since when is pissed != offended?

See my post about offense being a heightened form of instinct. The only difference between emotional offense and physical assault is the imminence and magnitude of the threat.

So your argument is that if the magnitude of the threat is only emotional, it should be ignored and you shouldn't care. Which is stupid. You can't suppress emotion forever. If I get someone you care about to come to your house and stand over your shoulder and berate you every day, I can guarantee that you will eventually get offended. Assuming they don't physically obstruct your path or progress, the threat would be entirely emotional.

As for your PS, then why did you ask "did you enjoy The Dark Knight?". The only way I can possibly interpret that is an attempt to goad MYF into responding about it. That's control. It's how politics work and have worked for some time.

I also just controlled you. I was pretty sure based on what I've seen in this thread that you'd respond to my accusation; and look, you just attempted to justify yourself to me. Why would you do that unless you cared about what I thought; and why would you care about what I think if you don't take offense?
