Does anyone use a PM software such as JIRA / Asana in a non-software development setting?

Inquiring minds would like to know which software you are using and why you chose it over it's competitor.

I looked @ Asana last night and it just seems so....lean...compared to JIRA.

I'm a systems engineer and we use JIRA to manage our daily tasks. it's miserable and i hate it. I think if i was a software developer it wouldn't be so bad though, but the way our organization and company uses it, it feels like institutionalized micromanagement.

Why do we use it? we have no choice.

I use JIRA at my day job and love it. I'm asking the OP because I'm looking for a solution for managing some other businesses at a high level.

Is JIRA really a true PM tool? We use it basically as a workflow system and assignment of tasks for like issue resolution, etc. If you're working in an Agile environment or wanted to use its Kanban tools sure but as a replacement for MS Project or something?

I haven't used it for anything other than software development and I can't find it being any good for just PM stuff.

Don't they complement each other instead of competing? MS project for things like timeline/scheduling/resource management and JIRA for task/issue tracking + reporting & dashboarding.

We use Jira daily, mostly for project tracking. It's usable but it seems like we are doing more tracking stuff than actually doing the work. Jira is not my favorite, but unfortunately my opinion doesn't matter much to the higher ups.

Im a pm.

Haven't used jira but my devs do. It seems theyre more for issue tracking / support for devs than pm for pmgmt.

We use Rally for Kanban and scrum.

Or.. a well run agile over well run waterfall any day.

Theres a reason why tons of industry making top down switch to agile. Because its been proven, even in enterprise level projects.

My client aims to be fully agile viable by 2017 eoy. Theyre the market leader in industry.

Unitedhealthcare, bcbs and indev are going full agile too based on what my consultants tell me.

A lot of clients and executives don't understand Agile methodologies and just think it means no paperwork. If you have poor results in waterfall then you're not going to suddenly have good results in agile.

Waterfall and agile can be equally as terrible if the people in charge don't understand how to follow the methodology.

I've only been in software development professionally for about 10 years, but it seems well run agile is superior than well run waterfall. But, I'm doing consulting now, so I don't even care. I'll do whatever you want and the more time you waste and more work you create, just means more money for me.

I think BAs are getting screwed by this agile trend.

Many BAs will be let go because agile dont need em
