We picked up a cheaper Sony BD player like 1.5-2 yrs ago and I can't take it anymore. I won't even rent BD movies anymore b/c the damn thing takes so long to load.
Does anyone make a faster BD player? Anyone have any personal experience w/ one that seems pretty quick to load up?

The newer generations are a bit faster, but still much slower than a DVD player.

My biggest beef is their insistence on putting the commercials and previews on the discs that you can't just bypass and go straight to the menu. Highly annoying.

I miss my HD-DVD player. (granted it was also slow as hell)
 
Isn't Oppo BDP-83 supposed to be fast? (expensive, too)

Cheaper option might be to buy a PS3 Slim.
 
I have a Sony BDP-S360 and the only other comparison I have is with a PS3 Slim, and the Slim's faster. But then again, it can do a whole lot more and cost twice as much.
 
PS3 fat was and probably still is the fastest, the slim is slightly slower for some reason but still among the fastest. Both are very good at upscaling DVDs. Both also stream Netflix -- currently using a disc but it will be built in later this year.

Studios also always test their BD-live code on PS3s, and PS3s will probably get firmware updates for at least another 6 years (Sony is expecting to sell it for ~10 years, even after the PS4). So it's likely to be the most compatible player for many more years.

In my experience, blurrays load up fast on an HTPC.

And oppo basically always includes higher quality parts, so I'm sure they're pretty quick too.

If you actually purchase the movie you won't have that problem. Studios have a special rental version of the movie that won't let you skip commercials or previews, retail versions don't.

The list is not really a complete list.

I'd say the Anthem BLX200 is the fastest BD player followed by the Oppo 80 and Oppo 83, then the PS3 Slim and then all others. The Anthem player is fast as hell, but it ain't cheap. You know what they say though, you gotta pay to play. 😉

I REALLY don't understand this obsession with speed on BD players. I can understand if it takes 5 minutes to load, but none of the modern day players take that long. And the 320 is definitely not that slow. I have a 23FD (similar to the 320) and a PS3, and the 23FD is plenty fast for me. Is the PS3 faster? Yes. Do I care if it takes a few more seconds to load? Not at all. Picture and audio quality are my main concerns, and the Pioneer player does a FANTASTIC job at that. 🙂

I own a JVC XV-BP1, one of the fastest players on there (and there's an easy firmware hack to make it region free too). Absolutely love it.

On the flip side, I have a Toshiba HD-DVD player on another TV that's PAINFULLY slow. Ugh, it makes me try to avoid using it whenever possible.
 
I'll sell you a brand new in the box Samsung BDP-1600 that's pretty quick. It's what I have and it's pretty quick for loading discus and does Netflix, Blockbuster, YouTube, and Pandora as well.

The previews and stuff REALLY pisses me off also...wtf...

PS3 for me.

What's the difference between a PS3 slim and fat?
Does a PS3 allow you to skip the commercials and bull shit previews on discs?

I only rent from Netflix and have a fat PS3. I honestly can't remember running into a Blu-ray where i couldn't either hit one of the two menu buttons or use the skip forward button to bypass the previews or commercials in the beginning.
 
Get the Oppo BDP-80, it's functionally identical to the BDP-83, but it lacks the ABT processing chip. It's also much cheaper than the 83 at $289 vs. $499.

Thanks to Sony's dick move in the last firmware update, not much. IIRC, the Slim uses 45nm components so it runs cooler and quieter. To the second question, no. It functions just like any other BD player.

I agree. The producers are creating a whole new generation of "start my disc and go get popcorn or coffee going while waiting for all the BS that you can't fast forward to be over with"
 
I had an old school sony .,. bd-150, I think? And, man, was the load time atrocious! My PS3 slim is miraculously faster in comparison, but there's still a wait.
