Does anyone listen to heavy metal/death metal anymore?

Primordial is awesome for a more atmospheric metal.
The last Unearth is good stuff.
son of Aurelius will always have a special place in my ears though 😛

Devin Townsend has a new album out. its actually 2

Sky Blue - is a Devin Townsend Project album
and Dark Matters which is the 2nd Ziltoid album

I'll have to check those out. I have been rather disappointed with Townsend's solo stuff as of late though.

Unfortunately, one of my favorite death metal bands hasn't released an album in 10 years: Necrophagist. They started working on one and it seems never finished it.

While not always heavy metal, Gwar remains a band I listen to on a regular basis. Am hoping to see them and their new lineup sometime soon. Sadly, all original members are now either departed or dead. I guess Derks and Roberts might as well be counted, as they came on shortly after the first one.

i think most death metal has gotten so good, so polished, that it starts to sound all alike; there are exceptions, though.

I used to listen to death metal when I was 18. Now I can't stand it, it sounds like nonstop puking, you can't understand a word, and the music is just a pile of garbage most of the time. Smashing the strings as hard and fast as possible is not necessarily a good thing.

I'll listen to anything that doesn't use a beat box. I want to hear practiced musicians. Not electronic oscillator crapola.

I always liked trash metal bands compared to death metal bands.

Maybe you just listen to the wrong bands?

(Not saying you have to like death metal. Each to his own taste. 🙂)

Damn. That was some great stuff.

I'm looking for some bands similar to Gojira, Amon Amarth, or Opeth. Any recommendations?

I can recommend Saturnus, but it's melodic doom, so pretty down tempo and not so aggressive in their sound. To me they make some of the most beautiful metal ever made.

For groovy death metal I listen to Illdisposed, because the can write good tunes and are a cool live band.

Not quite similar to what you asked for, but I threw them in anyways 😛

Band : Soen
Album : Tellurian

Really, really good progressive metal album, one of the best I have heard this year. I highly recommend it.

My music tastes have become lame, or rather all my favorite bands have changed.

Opeth, Katatonia, Anathema, all Death Metal in their early days. Now, prog rock or psychedelic rock.

Looks like every loser and drug addict today is in a metal band. Finding a good band in the sea of copycats sucks. Back in 80s most bands had talent.

There is plenty of talent out there today, I would argue more than at any time. However, as you said there is a ton of filler to go through as well.
