Does anyone listen to heavy metal/death metal anymore?

I've seen quite a few heavy metal bands live, but the "growling" type singing just sucks to me. It's awful, ruins what might be some pretty good music otherwise.

It's a skill, but it's not singing. I'd far rather hear some actual singers than that crap.

It's an acquired taste, much like beer. 😉 I started with Death's Scream Bloody Gore in the late 80's, and I couldn't understand a single lyric to it at the time (and probably still can't). I would just filter out the voice and focus on the music. Then became completely oblivious to the voice in all death metal. I almost just listen to it as if it was just another instrument, rather than thinking of it as singing and lyrics these days. I couldn't tell you a single line in a death metal song and I probably have at least 30 albums from the genre.

What I like best about Death Metal. I find myself being able to do my job (software engineering) easier when I'm listening to it. Instead of actually listening to the song (which is a distraction) it helps filter out all the noise in the office around me so I can concentrate. Which is why I like it so much. 😉

you just described how i listen to ALL music, the content of the vocals is irrelevent, its simply how they blend in sonicially with the music like an instruement

i thought i was the only person like this

i also get to rock out to it on speakers at work in my lab, which is awesome

So I've been really getting into some newer progressive bands. People call it Djent, but that name makes me angry. So I just call it progressive.

Check this stuff out.

Periphery (the best drummer on earth. My opinion obviously)

Heavy metal music is very much "uncool" now.

Some of the bands that I do like (80's and 90's period - check out the songs on Youtube) = Great White (Angel Song), Cinderella (Don't Know What You Got til It Gone) , Def Leppard (Hysteria - they will have a concert with Heart in Dallas in July 20th), Guns N Roses (November Rain) , Scorpions, Van Halen (with Diamond Dave), Iron Maiden, just to name a few.

Here is a very much "uncompleted" list = http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_heavy_metal_bands

Some of the newer "heavy music" bands that I like = Linkin Park (In The End), System Of A Down (Arial).

You have good taste🙂

I was never really into Death Metal. Loved trash metal bands. 80's and 90's all the way for me as well.

I was drunk on the weekend and came home at 1am and listened to the entire Scorpions Tokyo Tapes Album with headphones and had an out of body experience. Sweet Jesus what an incredible live album.

Scorpions are more hard rock than heavy metal/death metal.

new Opeth album came out a few weeks ago

its amazing

How is it compared to Heritage? I thought Heritage was really bad. Some people love it. My favorite has been Black Water Park. So I'm not really all that excited to buy the new album.

Funny, I would consider everything he mentioned "rock and roll" and not really heavy metal. Definitely not "heavy."

I will never understand the opeth becoming elevator/waiting room music. I can understand not doing the death metal growls because I honestly like his clean voice more, but the riffs used to be so awesome.

Heritage was just a poor album, past the softness.

This album is simply amazing on its own merits.

I am almost 50 and I still listen to soulfly and skinny puppy and helmet.

The inventors/creators of techno are no in their 50's

It just scares me to think to see if skinny puppy will keep making music when they are in their 70's.... lol!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
