Does anyone know which comedian silently stared at the audience for several minutes...

Basically he starts off quietly staring. After a few minutes some people start giggling at him. Soon people start laughing out loud, eventually the whole audience is bursting with laughter

i think it was george carlin, but i have no idea

edit: people seem to remember this on the ed sullivan show, but nobody remembers names
some people have suggested kaufman or steven wright but i dont think it's them

No, I don't think that was him, but I do know who you're talking about.

What? No, I don't have any help to offer. :p

Well, if that WAS him, then who was that one guy who would do that incredibly dry, deadpan crap who just sounded bored out of his mind and tired as hell every time he did a show? He had a few funny bits, but I just remember him jumping from topic to topic, all the while acting tired and so damn deadpan...

You know, it SOUNDS like him, and some of the material I'm finding seems like Wright... But I swear he was from a while back, not recent like the videos I'm finding.

I could be wrong though.

I stared out at the empty theater and remembered an act I?d seen once on The Ed Sullivan Show. A comic strides to center stage, adjusts his tie, clutches the microphone, and says nothing. After fifteen seconds of silence, the audience begins to chuckle. After thirty, they are laughing harder. As the amusement builds, the comic leans into the microphone and says, ?How do you like me so far?? The audience flips out.

i do not know the guy but i know what you are talking about
nothing like awkward silence to make everyone uncomfortable and get them to laugh

wow... do you think anyone would seriously laugh at the silent audience joke?

come to think of it, I'd just laugh to hear someone laughing for no reason... like this is the stupidest thing ever. stupid things make people laugh I suppose.

I remember an episode of the Tom Green show where he volunteered to do stand-up comedy and he just made noises in the microphone..they threw him off stage. I was laughing so hard.

Hey, I think I remember that from Ed Sullivan. Somebody very nervous, sweating, looking like a deer in the headlights. For some reason I'm picturing early Rodney Dangerfield?

Rodney wouldn't just stand there, he throws jokes like a machinegun. Lots of little bad jokes, until the one good joke hits you.
