Do you think the ODs at a giant corporation like Lens Crafters and Wal-Mart are less capable than the ODs who work for a giant corporate healthcare management system or a group of MD/DO ophthalmologists?

Just make sure your frames are comfortable. You shouldn't notice that you're wearing glasses.
1.) Absolutely not.
I was thinking more along of the lines of chain vs. non-chains.
Just like choosing to get your medication at CVS/Wal-Mart vs. a non-chain independent pharmacy, your medication co-pay is the same regardless of where you go. If the prices are the same, why not go to the independent and form the personal relationship? I certainly don't think that pharmacists that work at independents are more knowledgeable than those that work at chains. In this case since I don't have vision insurance, but I will have to shop around on prices and read reviews.

2.) How does one determine that in 10-15 minutes while trying them out? For something you may be wearing all day 24/7 I'm not sure there's a way to know that. Do these glasses shops have a returnable/exchange policy if you're not pleased about the comfort after a week or so?

Otherwise known as nerd glasses. 😉
Yeah, I definitely don't want anything that looks like that...Too nerdy.
I also won't be wearing contacts that's for sure because I don't want the hassle of changing and cleaning them everyday or eye infections.

How in the world does only half a frame make the glasses look "nerdy"? 😵 You should have seen some frames I wore when I was younger if you wanted to see what nerdy glasses actually look like D:.

I've worn glasses for two years now and I still hate it. Luckily I'm not too blind and I can still see fine without them, just need for detail for distance.

I am very lucky. I still do not need glasses :crossesfingers:

My mom, dad and siblings all needed glasses by the time they were my age.
My wife, sister-in-law, brother-in-law, all three parents-in-law, a nephew and a niece all have worn glasses or contacts since they were young.

I am hoping my kids got my eyes as they do not need glasses (yet). There is also some hope for my other little nephew.

At the age of 42 my distance vision has gone just fuzzy enough to notice and be annoying. I have glasses that fix that, but I usually don't wear them.

I'm sure if we took a vote here, everyone would agree with my position.
I've said they're nerd glasses and so has Jules. 😉
They may be less nerdy than what you used to wear, but it still looks nerdy.

Glasses with unnecessarily thick frames in general are usually "nerdy". The fact that it's full frame thick or half frame thick has little relevance. In fact, I'd say the half frame thick ones look even more nerdy than the full frame thick ones if anything.

How old are you?

I've needed glasses since grade 4 probably. I started wearing contacts in grade 9, then went to glasses from grade 10 through 12 and first 3 years of college. I've been wearing contacts for the past 3-4 years. Oh ya, I only wear contacts outside the house. Glasses at home - more comfortable.

Disposable (2 week?) soft contacts are great. I wear them for 2 to 4 months at a time, and they're only $45 a box (3 pairs w/astigmatism). Never had an eye infection/issues. Just keep them clean, wash your hands before touching them, and don't re-use lens solution.

Maybe you should try a different brand. I never feel mine, I wouldn't even know I was wearing them if it weren't for the better vision they give me. Glasses are uncomfortable. Metal things hanging from your face, can't lay down and rest your head on the couch because you'll bend them.

So if they have no frame, they are infinitely un-nerdy?

I think I started wearing glasses when I was like in 5th grade. But at that time I used them very little. I didn't have full-time glasses until later in High School. Need them for distance. Within a few feet I can see perfectly.

I tried contacts for a while, but adding yet another thing to my morning/night routine in addition to the expenses and extra care required made me stop.

On the other hand you don't have to spend 5-10 minutes extra in the bathroom putting them on and taking them off everyday, cleaning them, or worry about getting eye infections.

I'm nearsighted and need eyeglasses to drive. I'm fine without it on my daily chores. Never tried contacts, surprisingly my prescription hasn't changed in the last 20 years.

If they have a thin frame, or yes, no frame as you suggested.
Will prefer one that has a thin one to one that has none.

Half frames are off the table for me...At least the particular one I've seen in this thread so far. 😉

I wear contacts, from the minute I get up to the minute I go to bed every day.

This. And clear care is the correct answer.

lol.

if it weren't for the better vision they give me.

Another thing I don't understand, but it's true. My contacts are *significantly* more sharp than a fresh glasses prescription. edit: I have very bad correction with astigmatism. I'm sure that has something to do with it.

It takes me 1 minute at the most to put them in and take them out. I don't clean them either, just put them in with the solution. I've been wearing them for 7 or 8 years now, never had a problem, and wear them for up to 8x as long as they say they are supposed to be used for.

I actually forgot the picture that I linked... it was just some random one I found typing "half-frame glasses" into Google's image search. My frames look nothing like that and are pretty much as thin as any full-frame 😱.

The pictures were just to show the difference between full-frame and half-frame... not the fact that the one's style might be the thick, black, nerdy type 😛.

How much on average do you spend a year on contact lenses, solutions, and such?

Nope, my eyesight is perfect. I always laugh when I look at my upper-division classes and see that everyone else either has glasses, or has talked about wearing contacts. I love being genetically superior.

I've been wearing contacts since I was 12. I can't get laser eye surgery because my pupils are too big, but the doctors say that the new machines will be capable of doing my eyes.
