TikTok indirectly influenced me.

Would have NEVER gone down the JoJo road that led to Mariah Carey if I didn't listen to that song called "Old Town Road"....

So...yes...it's Gen Z's fault I have reached musical enlightenment. ;)

Wait, it's not enough to blame the boomers for everything, you are now targetting yutes? Are you ever resposible for anything?

YT isn't going away anytime soon I completely agree BUT "sooner than expected" would include "in 10 years losing half its viewers" the way I meant it and I should have written exactly that instead.

I think Google as a whole may have "peaked" or close to it ... time will tell.

I think you made some fair points...but you did exaggerate one point, imo.

Imo, Youtube ain't dying because of TikTok. It's core audience of millennial and older aren't expiring yet. I'm still waiting for LittleKuriboh to finish Yu-gi-oh the Abridged Series. :p There is also no substitute for "involved and substantial" content like tutorials, entertainment....basically more coherent videos, which TikTok isn't even trying to replace.

He did want you to present some more solid evidence. I do think anecdotal evidence can be accepted up to a point. Sometimes, a poll questionnaire does not capture the "flow of actions" that personal observation does.

I mean, this following article about TikTok being used as a search engine could have helped your point. If TikTok is being used as a search engine, that's a threat to Google's foundation https://www.nytimes.com/2022/09/16/technology/gen-z-tiktok-search-engine.html
That's how you debate a topic. :beercheers: I wasn't aware of the search engine data, very informative.

Not sexual, more like watching sports. I need your 40-time, bench press, etc. :p
I don't run. I don't disclose my lifts since they are nothing special. I'm a meat popsicle. My likes are Red Stripe Beer, long walks on short piers, and my favorite color is clear.

A documentary on why TikTok is destroying genZ. Its an interesting watch.

Really scary although it applies more the overall "social-media" scene and also the larger "soundbite" approach to nearly everything news or informational these days.

This superficial approach out of necessity leaves out the "pesky details" of the story which explain WHY it happened and thus are 100% required to understand the situation in any depth and to differentiate truth from mis-information.

Explains a lot about how 'murica arrived in the predicament we have today where teachers and scientists are met with mistrust while proponents of superstitious lies based on nonsense are taken as absolute truth by many.

I don't use TikTok, I don't partake of whatever that FB thing is that's kinda like them ("stories", is it?), and I begrudgingly have an Instagram because that's how all the musicians in the area connect, and I don't use the "reels" there.

If you're going to use Tiktok do it on PC, the app is full of spying and data harvesting stuff, I would not touch that with a 20 foot pole.

You can watch TikTok content on a properly locked down browser with adblock behind a software firewall (AND a NAT router) that filters outbound "requests" without much risk on an up-to-date Windows or even more-so Linux PC.

However I would hesitate to even view TikTok media in a browser on my phone and installing the app on any device is downright foolish.

Yea. Reminds me of the religious claims on YouTube.

Christians who have come back from heaven and hell. Christians who talk to jesus or God. Religious folk who claim to be prophets. People who have been reincarnated, and other people who can talk to the dead. Like Kobe, Dahmer and Marilyn Monroe. Other Christians who have seen dead celebrities in heaven and hell. And, people eat it up. Some of those videos have millions of views, and thousands of comments. But, as Carl Sagan once said "Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence." It seems that people aren't able to critically think anymore. I'm sorry but I need more evidence than some testimony from a crazy person. if I told you that I ate a ham sandwich for lunch, you'd be indifferent. But, if I told you that I hung out with Jesus and the Buddha in my bedroom, and I was given the information to existence you should want more proof than my silly statement. I once jotted down in a YT video that I was in heaven. I got so many questions like "how was heaven" and "did I like it there." No one even questioned what I said. It was shocking. They just took my word.

Now we're getting more into the human-condition unfortunately which is a bit beyond the scope of the OP.

The root of that problem is that most people are so desperate for an answer to life's "big questions" that they'll seize on literally anything which claims to provide one.

Explains why all bad-actors (or id10t's with "good intentions") have to do with misinformation to turn it into a mainstream belief is REPEAT REPEAT REPEAT loudly enough and for long enough and eventually many will take it as fact.

YouTube may or may not lose half it's viewers in 10 years or less, but it certainly won't be due to TikTok.

I hope you're right about that .... but I wouldn't bet against it either.

In 2021, the Internet went for TikTok, space and beyond
(Cloudflare)

For kicks ask a few younger/under 16 kids what their favorite Youtube channel is. (and prepare for more than a few blank stares)

TikTok vs. YouTube: Which Is Better For You?
(Search Engine Journal)

Pay particular attention to the viewer-demographic information.

As an aside we really do have a serious problem on our hands with depreciated (deprecated..?) attention-span.

True not everyone needs to be capable of sitting down and pouring through "War & Peace" but if a 7 minute YT video is "pushing it" and Google felt the need to add "shorts" to compete (and they did!) we are in trouble.

My attention span was always a bit of an issue but since smartphones and some social media, it's gone into the shitter. I'm trying to find ways to regain my attention span. There are a couple good books out, I have one, if I could only finish it.

I've done a few things. I have turned off notification sounds so I don't hear them in the morning or right before bed. I've turned off a lot of notifications in general. I also don't use my phone as an alarm clock anymore.

I've noticed the same in myself and I don't like it one bit!

Along with shutting off ALL audible and most visual notifications (other than SMS and security updates) I've recently started keeping my phone in my pocket 99% of the time in public and have also forced myself to start reading actual paper books again which is the only thing I've found that really helps!

I use TikTok quite a bit. There's some hilarious stuff on there, plus some of my favorite musicians tend to post and interact there. Joe Walsh was even giving lessons from time to time :)

Youtube started doing these TikTokky shorts too. And I have to say, they are not bad for getting some quick laughs.

You mean the internet finally got around to re-inventing Vines? :p
I wasn't into them the first time, TBH.

Maybe I'm too old for these short videos, but I found some interesting ones.
That's the problem. A lot of them are too dumb for anyone with a brain. Takes a lot of scrolling to find something interesting. I have much better luck with youtube's recommendations.

FB has short videos now too, I sometimes get sucked in, but most of them are BS, they'll start to show something interesting, but not show the whole thing or nothing actually happens, then you go to check comments, and half the time they don't even load properly because the site is so glitchy. Then I close the tab and go do something else. Come to think of it the entire FB site seems to be designed to give you dopamine in very short bursts, because you click through about 5-10 pages or scroll screens worth, then it will just glitch and you can't click anything. I definitely spend less time on there now because of that so if that's their goal, then mission successful I guess? lol.

You can't avoid tik tok, it's like a sodding virus all over the place. I absolutely don't have an account but that computer generated voice is all over the bloody place.
I can, and do avoid it. Maybe I'm just old, but what voice? I'm not familiar.

It's one of the places I never made an account, and don't feel the need to. I won't click links for vids there, I just don't care for most of the content.
