Depending on the career path you choose to follow, a degree is sometimes considered a prerequisite for a given position - As was the situation with me.

A degree usually allows you to start higher up on the career ladder.

Yep, both full time positions I've had since graduating required a BS

A degree is pretty much required for any job that isn't like a BestBuy job. Even if you have a degree, it's still difficult to find a good paying job. I guess that's what happens when the economy is over populated with undergraduates.

I have a six figure income with no degree, as a network engineer.

When people ask me what I have my degree in, I reply stating that I majored in computer science and math in college. It's not a lie, and people accept it.

do you have a degree or dont you. saying you majored in something when you dont have a degree is lying to me. going to college and not finishing is not the same thing as majoring in something.

I've always thought that you could have a major, but not finish it...
Is that not true?

A proposed major perhaps? A major is merely nothing more than completing certain courses. If you haven't completed them, then you haven't majored in it. That's what I think.

I am often mistaken for an civil engineer, but I correct people as soon as they make the mistake. The last thing I want to happen is for someone to get the idea that I am misrepresenting myself in any way. That can toast your reputation so fast.

I have a credit in Spanish. That's right boys and girls, college level Spanish.

And that is it.

And neither Bill Gates or Steve Jobs have a degree. How many are there in the world like them? I am talking about most people; you're obviously an exception.

Let me put it this way: I have a family member who went into a job after high school. He is now almost 50 and has worked his way up to middle management. Most of his bosses are under 30 and have college degrees.

A degree isn't required at a lot of places (even places you wouldn't expect), but it definitely helps. Larger companies can/will hold it over your head, come time for salary and promotion discussions.

Alot of jobs I am looking at will accept PE certification instead of a degree, but personally I would always consider a degree to be the way to go. I just can't see how dropping out of college with one year left can ever be a good idea unless you were gonna fail out anyways. A college degree is required for pretty much (no not EVERY) and decent paying job. And the number of jobs that will allow you to get away with not having a degree is pretty small, computer type companies are the only ones that I personally know of that will accept impressive previous project work instead of a degree. I mean for example in the area where I was working this summer I think it is required by LAW that you have a degree or PE certification to sign off on construction documents. Even where they might claim to hire people without a degree it will be a HUGE bonus to have one. Also, I'm not sure what colleges ya'll are going to where you feal you arent learning anything or aren't being challenged and what not, but I have learned TONS in my college career and have grown much more mature and professional for the experience. Sure when you get out in the "real world" you will be doing lots of stuff you didn't learn in college, but college provides you with a basic understanding of a field and given you the skills needed to become an expert in your particular concentration at some other point in life, not as soon as you graduate.

I mean for example I am interviewing for a job to work on nuclear plant construction, well of course there is not "nuclear plant construction" class in college, but all the problem solving skills I have learned and the basic understanding of electrical elements will provide the foundation to complete this or any other such job which I end up getting hired for. Employeers see that degree and know that a person has developed this foundation.

My resume says the years I attended college (95-98), the school, and my major. It doesn't say "Bachelors of Science" or anything like that. Some people have interpreted it as having a degree. I'll correct someone in an interview if they ask directly but it's possible to interpret as having a degree. I sleep comfortably at night.

Well if people asked me, I will tell them because I'm an unmotivated, lazy, suffering from chronic depression, and insomnia. Of course, not unless i'm looking for a job.

regardless of how much you know, a degree will most likely get you further

One more year? you're not going to finish and get your degree?

And yes, when I hear someone say "career" I think of college graduate.
