Baseball is a game of details and of anticipation. Out of that seeming boringness could erupt the greatest play you've ever seen. Understanding the strategy is a big part as well. Will the batter get the green light to swing on 3-1? Should the runner go here? Should the infield play in or not? Is it better to pitch around this guy to get to a slumping #5 hitter?

One of the things I like best is that you get to know the players over the course of a year because broadcasters have time to tell you all kinds of interesting anecdotes. Vin Scully is great at this. I feel more connected to a baseball team than a football team, for example, because you don't get to hear much about anyone other than the star players.

If anyone wants a good book to explain some of the game's intricacies, I recommend Tim McCarver's "Baseball for Brain Surgeons and Other Fans".

<< fausto: ichiro is the king of that kind of stuff >>

Yup. Excellent example. Drives other teams totally crazy as they have to keep an eye on him all the time instead of just focusing on the batter. Really throws a wrench in the defense. This is part of why I like Lou Piniella as a manager...really knows how to play "small-ball" (much more interesting to watch than a home run derby-type game IMO)

He's a better hitter than Furcal too. Raf's a tad streaky with his hitting.

With the exception of hockey, baseball is the greatest spectator sport ever.
My dream was to be a professional statistician though, so my sense of "interesting" may be much different than yours.

Baseball is ninety percent about what MIGHT HAPPEN NEXT, whereas football and basketball are 90% what JUST DID HAPPEN. So if you can't anticipate the scenarios, then it will be boring... I love baseball, though I would give a toe to see MLB adopt a salary cap.

Hehe...baseball stats crack me up sometimes. You know you're waaaay to involved when you start thinking about how player x bats against this pitcher, with a 3-1 count, in the third inning, with one man on base, when his team is behind by more than three runs, in the month of june, at night, at home, on a thursday, with a full moon, after a steak dinner and a good crap the night before, and re-watching "Shrek" before going to bed.

and I'm only half kidding in the above.;)

Ugh. Not a big fan of the salary cap. A salary cap is just a way for owners to ensure that they can profit without actually having to invest in the team.

If you're a fan of the Cincinnati Bengals, you know exactly what I'm talking about.

Hey, it provides alot more brain activity than, say, <John Madden>You talk about big hits, if he was a 60s Mo-Town group, that'd be #1!</John Madden>. Even though, I like football as well, so I guess I shouldn't mock the brain dead sports. :)

I know....I'm just kidding around. The thing with BB stats is knowing where the relevance level starts dropping off. Probably around the third thing I listed in my theoretical situation above.

I love baseball. You have to know the game well to be able to appreciate it. It is all about the details.

I haven't watched a whole game since the strike. Your talking about a lifelong White Sox fan here who even stuck with them when they wore shorts as a uniform trouser.

Can't say that I miss it at all.

Hey Spooner

Why do Sox fans shout "Noma" all the time (i know it's that dudes name)? Did they get that from SNL (with those boston skits) or where they doing it well before that?

A-ha! I knew there had to be another local around here somewhere...

The Bengals come in $5+ million under the salary cap nearly every year. So Brown pockets that money. You know he's stinking rich, and making boatloads of money every year, and he still insists on coming in way under the cap every year. Jackass.

Unlike Basketball and Football the skill level in Baseball keeps improving. In the NBA today it's a rarity if any of the young players have any concept of Defence (let alone making Free throws) . Regarding the NFL, the fact that a team like the N.E. Patriots can win the Superbowl demonstrates how dismal the skill level has become in that league

I love baseball. You have to watch a team that is YOUR team. I have followed the Atlanta Braves since Dale Murphy was there. I also love to play so I know what is going on when I watch, to me it rocks. I wish I lived in Atlanta just so I could watch the Braves. I have even asked some people that live there to see what kinda jobs are open for a Double major in MIS and Mngt.

<< I got back late last night from an Oriole's vs. Red Sox game in Baltimore that my company sponsored a bus trip to.

Basically, it was just an excuse to get all the free beer and hot dogs we could (part of the package deal)

Anyway, MAN, baseball is boring. I thought at least being at the stadium would be cool, and it sorta was, but there was very little emotion!

Let's not get started on baseball on TV, cause that really drags....

Don't get me wrong, to each his own, I just was sitting there through 9 innings last night trying to stay awake!!

(then again, both teams kinda suck) :p

edit: my grammar = suck

You got treated to a free game and you're biatching ??

Where's my trout, you need a good slap upside the head you ungrateful wretch :)

Oh,playing golf can be cool, except for the ungodly hour you've gotta get up, I just think watching it on TV is rather dull :)

Baseball is great *because* it's so slow...you can drink like crazy and it doesn't make it that much harder to follow the game

It's better to attend the games... That has more to do with the social aspect of the game though(i.e. girls/beer)... I can't watch it on TV, unless we're talking about ESPN highlights...
