the national pass time.

baseball grew up in the northeast where people would leave work or home during the middle of the afternoon when it got warm and humid to relax in a more open environment where there would be a breeze blowing around. until the dodgers and giants moved to cali there wasn't a team west of st louis.

red - most say that the league is getting to large, the player pool is diluted. you are correct though, the number of quality players is increasing, especially as good prospects are coming from the carribbean and south america. not enough to overcome 4 new teams in the last decade. good thing the expos are in first and the twins are close.

does anyone know the history of the third major league? i know there have been 3 but haven't found any info on the other one.

baseball is one of the best games there is to go watch. there's more to it than just the game.

now hockey, that's nonstop action. :)

i love them both.

<< I got back late last night from an Oriole's vs. Red Sox game in Baltimore that my company sponsored a bus trip to.

Basically, it was just an excuse to get all the free beer and hot dogs we could (part of the package deal)

Anyway, MAN, baseball is boring. I thought at least being at the stadium would be cool, and it sorta was, but there was very little emotion!

Let's not get started on baseball on TV, cause that really drags....

Don't get me wrong, to each his own, I just was sitting there through 9 innings last night trying to stay awake!!

(then again, both teams kinda suck) :p

edit: my grammar = suck
>>

You've got to be kidding me man.The Red Sox are the second best team record-wise in the majors (13-6)

As far the crowd being without emotion I would blame it on the fact that the Orioles suck and the newness of Camden Yards has worn off.

I love Baseball whether live or on Tv.I know alot of people that think baseball is boring but yet find basketball somehow amusing.Don't get me wrong I like basketball but the quality of play has sunk to a real low level.
The mere fact most teams have a hard time breaking 95 points and the only highlight of the game might be some dunk a guy did with his team down by 15 with 30 seconds to go shows how bad the brand of basketball is being played.

<< I agree... baseball is a great sport, but it's always better to go with someone who can explain what's really going on. That's why I also LOVE watching Sunday Night Baseball on ESPN with Joe Morgan. Now that's a GREAT show.... >>

Joe Morgan is interesting. Every once in awhile he'll have something interesting to say, but at the same time every once in awhile he'll say something really stupid.

For example, last week in an online column he said that having spees is THE most important characteristic in a leadoff hitter -- even more so than the ability to get on base. What are you smoking, Joe? What's even more incredible about it is that when he played, Morgan was among the best at getting on base. So you'd think he'd understand the value of getting on base. I think he has the problem where he wants to make an interesting point, but instead of just making the point, he goes too far and says something dumb and incorrect.
>>

Hehe I feel for anyone trying to learn anything about baseball from Joe Morgan.

Every pitch no matter fastball or off-speed is a cutter
The batter should be looking to take a pitch on a 3-2 count

And that was just last weeks game

Baseball is an acquired taste. Nothing beats skipping work to go to a day game.

<< Hehe...baseball stats crack me up sometimes. You know you're waaaay to involved when you start thinking about how player x bats against this pitcher, with a 3-1 count, in the third inning, with one man on base, when his team is behind by more than three runs, in the month of june, at night, at home, on a thursday, with a full moon, after a steak dinner and a good crap the night before, and re-watching "Shrek" before going to bed.

and I'm only half kidding in the above.;)

One of the reasons that announcers can give us this much information is because there is a lot of down time. I like the game, but I still think they need something like the 24 second rule in basketball or a limited number of time outs like in football.
Watching a pitcher scratch his ass, pick his nose, fix his cap, shake off four signs, spit, look around the bases, throw to first and scratch his crotch before he finally gets ready to pitch to the batter who just stepped out of the box to knock the dirt off his cleats for the third time can be time consuming and boring, even to the knowledgeable.

I agree. It's funny how it's one of the few pro sports where you can be out of shape and still compete (yes, some of them are quite the physical specimens...but many leave little to be desired!)

Heh i watched the Cubs play today (am a sox fan, but the tickets were free) and now i'm watching the Astros--well, by "watching" i mean "checking updates on espn.com." Safe to say I'm more or less baseball insane.

It's hard to like the sport unless you know enough about the rather intricate rules imho. I played soccer for a number of years, but it's not that much harder than "don't touch ball with your hands, put it in the goal." I've tried to teach baseball to my roommate, who doesn't know the first thing about it, and it's difficult.

If anybody wants to know why it's not a slow sport, and why there's stuff going on in those seconds between pitches, look at George Will's _Men at Work_

Then again, i could be entirely wrong.

The only shape those 350+lb NFL linemen are in is round. Hockey and Baketball are the only 2 sports where being in shape is mandatory.(Although a few NBA centers are a little round in the belly)

i don't think that baseball is that boring. it does have its really amazing "get out of your seat and fvck stuff up" kind of moments. but i personally like faster games like hockey and lacrosse.

I think he's an idiot. The guy likes to think he knows everything, and then when a player does something he didn't expect he tries to write it off like it was a bad play. At least Jon Miller is a pleasure to listen to.

Team Sport with the most:

physically fit players: basketball
fastest and most stimina: soccer
Strongest players: football
boxing matches: hockey
most beer belly players and huge arms with steroids injected: baseball

dont get me wrong, i still watch baseball sometimes. it could be boring, but when you really like your team, it is never boring no matter how much they suck. i have no interest to watch any other teams no matter how good they are unless its my home team in any sports.

You think baseball is boring yet somehow you find 20+ guys chasing a little ball being kicked around a huge field of grass for 90 minutes to a 0-0 tie exciting?

I love watching baseball at the stadium over watching it on TV. But, I've gotta be with old high school friends to truly enjoy the game. When I was in Omaha, NE, my entire family went to AAA baseball for an entire $2 for the whole family on Thursdays. The was great entertainment for the money. I can't watch baseball on TV, but it's alright to listen to on the radio.

When did I ever say that I enjoyed watching soccer? I simply said that it was a very physicly exahusting sport. The only sport that I really like to watch is basketball but I watch football too

Somehow you list fottball players as the strongest but the baseball players are the ones taking steriods? How exactly did you come to this conclusion?

And I disagree with you saying basketball players being more fit than hockey players.Having played both basketball and hockey for fun I have to tell you it takes a whole lot more energy to skate around playing hockey than playing a full court basketball game.
