In your case, to take action requires you to actually move your foot to the brake or accellerator, then go through the whole process of engaging the cruise control. This takes valuable time away considering how much faster your actions could be if you weren't using the cruise control at all. Also, if you have to keep your present speed, it'd be far less dangerous for you to slide over to the left provided there's room to do so... not being accomidating is one thing but making yourself more prone to get in an accident is about as stupid as not maintaining the speeds of those around you (one of the reasons for going above the speed limit).

As for the merge, if the person who's merging is in front of your vehicle (not going fast enough) it's likely you who would be ticketed for hitting them from behind (failure to maintain safe distance).

Now, for me, I drive a stick 97 2.slow Jetta and make sure I'm merging at freeway speeds... and sometimes end up passing people to get on. Don't be afraid to give a car some gas when on the freeway people.

Also, it's called a freeway "on ramp"... nobody exits from it.

I agree with you, and I do accomodate people who are trying. I do apply common sense. What makes me mad as I and others have noted is when mr. or mrs. clueless speeds down the exit ramp (a long one) and pulls right ALONG SIDE OF ME and then starts to move over like I should just suddenly move for them.

You drive with your cruise control on in the right hand lane?

I'm more upset by the dumbasses in front of me who stop and wait for someone to let them in at the top of a merge lane onto the interstate. If I were in a beater I would be so tempted to help them merge

Yeah, thats my main complaint...the stupid old people that STOP on the on ramp. The sign says yield, not stop. What a bunch of retards...they're going to get us all killed.

LOL. I have that exact same moto. I'm pretty good about letting people in...but SUVs and of course big trucks always get the speed up and close the hole move by me. I like seeing where I'm going, they can go behind me for all I care.

How hard would it be for you to speed up or slow down so someone can merge on? You're supposed to share the road; they have no where else to go but onto the highway.
The person on the ramp is legally required to yield to people on the freeway. Persons already on the freeway have the right of way. Whether he is being "nice" or not is beside the point, he has the right of way from a legal standpoint and if someone merges and hits him it is the merging person's fault. Persons already on the freeway have no legal obligation to accomodate people who never learned how to guage speed and distance.

If the left lane is clear there is absolutly no reason why they person couldnt move over.

Most of the time it is not clear, and if it is why should I have to swerve in and out of lanes. As the guy above pointed out "persons on the freeway have no legal oblication to accomodate people who never learned how to gauge speed and distance'. I could not have said it better.

No I do use common sense, if there is a construction area and they have 50 feet to merge, I will move over or slow down or speed up for em, but when there is NO good excuse I wont.

Oh, courtesy is no good excuse?

And as the other guy above you said:
Having the law on your side is little comfort when somebody plows into your precious car because you were too obstinate and self-important to let them get on the road.

I cant stand the people who don't use blinkers when merging, and don't know how to merge.

IF YOU CANT MERGE, DONT DRIVE ON THE HIGHWAY!!!

People on the highway shouldnt have to be courteous or anything unelss its a trucker, since they are so huge and potentially can block the entire flow of traffic. People getting on the highway have a responsibility to know how to merge properly, under any circumstances.

Insurance wise, it would be both person's fault. Legal or not, both drivers have an obligation to not cause accidents and to be aware of their surroundings.

So, the person on the freeway would also take a hit on their insurance.

Is it worth it just to prove you are "right"? I dont think so.

Drivers who are not speed-flexible are the worst there are. It takes more than just your steering wheel to drive. Take your cruise control off. Learn to speed up and slow down as conditions require. Learn to be a courteous driver who practices proper lane discipline. Give up the road rage.
Will it really matter if you were in the "right" or not after someone (possibly you) is dead?

Wow, they let you drive? It isn't difficult to allow someone to merge in so you don't kill someone, especially when they are moving the speed limit.
