Does anyone else feel "leaky" if they don't reboot often?

At one point, I had this computer running straight for 130 days. I was impressed. But then I had to install codewarrior for AP Computer Science, and the damn thing made me restart my computer!! My CS teacher was quite ammused when I told her about that.

BUt durring that time, never one crash. All I really used durring that time was IE, Word, Excel, Outlook Express, Quicktime, AIM, ICQ, MSN messanger, and weather bug.

I have a K6-3 400 /w 256 mb ram. Stable as a rock.(really)

Yeah, I think I'm obsessive compulsive - but knowing that uptime is regarded as a measure of toughness here on the forums, I'm resolving to not restart when i have the opportunity. BUT blueghost75, what OS were you running on your K62?

SO FAR, TOTAL UPTIME - 39 min, 24 sec. AND COUNTING!!

Yep, at work we have Windows 98 on a Novel network. Definately resource heavy, and Win98 resource management sucks. Plus we use lots of 16-bit programs, yay!

At home Win2k and Linux don't have problems.

My computers seem to get slower the longer they have been running. I usually end up rebooting every day or 2 (when it feels like a 386). I'm not at all impressed with XP. it only lasts about 2 days where I had been able to keep a 98 system up for over a week! :Q

Win98se, yes. If I just use it for the net then I can run it for a few weeks without a reboot. If I watch any vids or play mp3's then it leaks bad. 512mb of no help in Win98, but Win2k likes it.

UPDATE - total uptime 2 hrs, 23 min, 25 sec. but I'm about to shut it for the night.

<< Not since Windows 2K Came into play! On my 98 (gaming) system, I reboot every time I finish playing a game (only takes about 20 secs). >>

Yep, I was the same way. 98 for games, 2K for everything else.

XP cured that. 🙂

Yep, until I got Win2K. In Win ME, just opening and closing ~20 browser windows kills my system resources, and I have to reboot. My uptime is almost 9 days on my 2K machine, even with plenty of browsing, word processing, chatting, emailing, and gaming.

<< Nope. I used to find Win 3.1/95/98 intolerable because I needed to reboot so often, whether I wanted to or not, but I've had Windows 2000 up for well over a month sometimes without any issues. >>

Yeah, I figured that out 2 years ago. Actually I was part of the preview program, so it was more like 2 and a half years ago. Yup, 3 month uptimes, unless I reboot for software installs. I've found XP is just as stable. All you hanging on to Win95/98/me are missing out.

yea, i do feel liek that often...even running with 2k, i always feel more refreshed rebooting...somehow seems like my OS is leaking memory etc. so i reboot

<< Have you ever heard of unix? >>

Obviously, if he gave a crap about Unix, he would have posted about Unix. Try to prove your dick size some other way.

In answer to your question, on my 98 machines, yes. On Win2K of XP, no. They don't begin to feel sluggish at all.

Uhh..? He didn't know what kill -9 ment, so I was gonna ask him if he knew what unix was before I wasted my time explaining what kill -9 ment.
Are you feeling ok tonight Russ? Do you really want to know my dick size?
>>

You know what? I was talking with a co-worker..and he always uses kill -1 to kill processes. he wondered why I always used -9. I'm like,
well, I just want to nuke the sucker, not just kill. He found I went on overkill 🙂

But isn't it better safe then sorry?

<< how do you check uptime? i forgot. >>

Start\programs\accessories\system tools\system information...in where it says your operating system, yada, yada.

<< Whenever I open and close a few programs and delete/create some files, I always feel like I need to reboot - like my machine is leaky/is losing resources - does anyone else feel like this?

I know that it's not true, and that my system w/XP pro is stable enough to stay up for days@ a time, but I dunno - I still restart each time I log off.

Anyone else?
>>

I feel this way too.

I feel like I could run win2k forever...

But I always end up installing new programs or updating operating system stuff, so I always end up rebooting...

I think my server was up for like 3 months, then the thing got all f'd up.

With 2K and now XP, the only time I restart is when I want to go in the box, change a legacy connection or am told to by the OS. I haven't had to restart these two OSes for any other reason.

Considering the fact that I'm always fiddling with my PC, this is every few days. I'm guess I can't leave well enough alone 🙂
