The murder rate is a lame reason for avoiding the country TBH. Mexico's murder rate relative to the USA's is roughly the same as USA's murder rate relative to NZ's. It's still not that unsafe from a big picture point of view - particularly is you chose your destination wisely.

Sure, why not. Were any tourist? No. I'm not involved in the drug war. Beautiful place.
If you read my responses in this thread I've been advocating not giving into the fear mongering, I would advise against visiting Acapulco right now as there's been reports of violence towards civilians as of late, the rest of the resort towns and even others are ok.

As for the guy that went to Tijuana, it's a real shithole there and I'd never go of my own will.

/Mexican.

You do know it is well known that Mexico under report a lot of their crime. Even some places in Mexico have found many cases of murder never make it into "official" reports. Of course with corruption so high it does not take a genius to see why not.

Really...most of the places that Americans go to for "tropical" vacations are nothing more than a small little pockets of safety and civilization surrounded by a 3rd world of raging poverty that most of us would want no part of. Jamaica, Bahamas, Virgin Islands, Costa Rica, Cancun, ect. Travel off the resort and you are in places that can make Detroit look like high class.

My in-laws just got back from Jamaica. They liked it, but said that they were repeatedly offered drugs by the locals. 😱

My wife has been pressuring me to go to a Mexican resort on vacation and I've been telling her it isn't worth the risk.

Try Playa Del Carmen.

They only dangers there are getting too drunk or eating too much and it's a lot nicer than Cancun. 😎

I forgot the name of the resort area near the Mayan ruins, but that's where she wants to go. I'm just not sure I'm comfortable venturing away from the resort into public areas. I might be paranoid, but I'll live with that label. 😀

Most if it is in the Yucatan peninsula, which is safe. The Mexican police look after the resort areas/towns/tourist destinations very closely.

I was in Riviera Maya myself last year. It was sooooooooooooooooo fucking so much fun.

The whole drug cartel shit goes down on west coast area (Tijuana) & just below Texas (Juarez).

The whole Cancun to Riviera Maya area is completely touristy and I never felt a SPECK of danger during excursions.

about 15 years ago i went with another Caucasian friend to East Tijuana, about 10 miles east of the San Ysidro crossing. past the bullring across the street from the Bob's Big Boy where the drug cartel mid-level managers hang out, to a flea market with a Mexican guy who specialized in stone-cutting & stone-carving.

which i would never do again ! on the way back, we stood out like, well, beloved patriot's.

I am thinking it's along the lines of some dude trying to negotiate his drug prices with a mexican thinking a USD is a great motivator.

ah forgot about this stupid thread.

just wanna give an update.

my trip in january to cancun was amazing ... went to xel-ha, went to isla-mujeres, walked all over the place, went scuba diving, took the bus places.

felt just as safe if not safer than over here in america.

last week 2 of my coworkers went on 2 seperate trips to cancun w/their families ... both said all was fine and dandy there.

anyone who thinks that part of mexico is remotely as dangerous as the border towns and stuff are just ignorant.

I used to get a car from San Diego and drive into a Mexico to a board plant that we gave work to.
Those were the days! They would throw the absolute best parties!

Mexico is a shit-hole. Even their own people don't want to live there.

The resorts are so isolated, they're not worth including in discussions about Mexico.

I am, for the most part, pretty left leaning. But on this issue, I don't see how there is so much debate. It is plain to see that there is a massive problem with Mexico, and our immigration laws. Not Canada, not Russia, not China... Mexico. Every state should be following suit with Arizona, starting with California.

I have no idea why any American would want to go to Mexico, when you can visit equally sunny, San Diego. You have almost the same amount of Mexicans as in Mexico, but without the fear of incarceration or even death... well at least a very reduced chance of either...

San Diego isn't so sunny.
