U.S. citizens traveling in Mexico have been attacked and killed, sometimes by traffickers, sometimes by security forces, six of them in the last week of October 2010. But then again, American citizens traveling in Mexico sometimes are the traffickers, or so the Mexican authorities allege.

    and...

About one out of every 8 Mexican-born people has moved to the United States

Even Mexicans don't want to live in Mexico.
I remember about 5 years ago when I got married I looked into Mexico for a honeymoon and even then State Dept had warnings such as being robbed, raped, and murdered.

There was a story recently where an American went to the store and was killed by police and they planted a gun on him after the fact. So you can’t trust the locals and you can’t even trust the police.

So why do people keep traveling there and think its isolated and nothing will happen to them?

    UPDATE:

    U.S. broadens Mexico travel warning
    http://www.cnn.com/2011/TRAVEL/04/26/mexico.travel.warning/index.html?hpt=C1

Ha, most of mexico either has red lines or completly red as don't travel unless you really have to.

Unfortunantly work has alot to do with it. Alot of people need to travel between Juarez and El Paso because alot of manufacturing is done in Juarez.

Death toll in Juarez last year? 3000+
Death toll in El Paso last year? around 7

    Thats an understatement...

An estimated 13,000 people met a violent death in Mexico in 2010, compared with 9,600 in 2009.

Almost 50% jump in just one year. People here in the US get upset when death rates jump more than a couple points.

FWIW, I think a majority of the real violence is on border towns. Not exactly tourist spots with the only draw being cheap, duty free booze and the "Oh we're in Mexico!" allure. The major tourist hotspots are still relatively safe and probably no worse off than most of the rest of major vacation spots that American's go to.

Really...most of the places that Americans go to for "tropical" vacations are nothing more than a small little pockets of safety and civilization surrounded by a 3rd world of raging poverty that most of us would want no part of. Jamaica, Bahamas, Virgin Islands, Costa Rica, Cancun, ect. Travel off the resort and you are in places that can make Detroit look like high class.

The more the screaming drunken gringos are frightened away, the more I enjoy Mexico.

We went to the Dominican Republic for our honey moon. We rode the local small van, went to the capital and walked everywhere, etc… and never felt unsafe. Only bad part was no one paid any attention to stop signs or lights.

And yea I read if you stay in the resort or tourist areas you are safe in some parts of Mexico. But if you are doing that then why even go. The point of going to another country is to see its history and people. In DR, and this summer Puerto Rico, we went to every place that was NOT a tourist trap. I grew up at the beach so maybe its just me, but sitting at a beach for no other reason gets boring fast esp if you flew a thousand miles to get there.

I love to go to Mexico and see all the history of it and its country side, its one of the reasons it made my honeymoon short list. But right now it be dumb to do so.

Also Jamaica is known for its crime, also crossed off my travel list.

I was in Cancun and Playa Del Carmen a few months ago, it's fine.

Stay out of northern Mexico and all the border towns however.

I used to go once a year when I was a kid, to visit my Dad, but I have not been there in many years and really have no desire to go back. Not really my kind of vacation destination.

I used to enjoy going to Mexico. But my dad and sister want to go there in Jan\Feb for scuba diving. I told them no thanks. The drug war used to be limited to the countryside and out of the resort cities. Now it seems like the drug cartels are moving into these cities to put pressure on the govt to back off. I dont want to be caught in the crossfire between these two organizations. It just isnt safe at all in Mexico.

Mexico is going through it's own mini-revolution right now. It's not so much about stopping the drug cartels as it is about putting the brakes on long standing corruption issues.

The resort areas are generally safe. Most of these incidents happen when tourists wander too far outside the hotel grounds, especially after dark. It's not something you'd want to do in a big American city, so what posses people to do it in Mexico is beyond me. Worse still, they behave badly, get into the drugs, or run into the infamous Latino machismo in the clubs. Gringo American and Canadian tourists make convenient targets. They're generally ignorant of how things function down there, they carry wads of cash with them, and they tend to walk around stupefied, either via booze or their own narcissism.

The key is to remain vigilant and remember that you're not in a country that respects the rule of law. Be street smart. If you don't think you're going to be safe there, just don't go there. Spend the week in Vegas instead. Same desert, more gambling.

Personally I like PDC a lot more than Cancun and plan to go back later this year, might possibly hop over to Cozumel for some diving too.

I have been wondering this for a while now. I have no desire to go to Mexico, there isnt anything there that appeals to me mainly due to the fact that when i travel to another country I do not want to worry about getting shot. Even though the resorts are beautiful and cheap i like to get out and explore the place. Being "captive" in a resort bubble just isnt my idea of a fun time. same goes for Jamaica and a couple other places.

I have but not in the last few years. I worked for a company that had a major plastic injection mold company for a vendor and went down to Tecate to view the facility and see some of the product they made for us along with some of the capital equipment we had purchased for them. We had a guy meet us at the border and he escorted us down to the plant.

Tecate is a shit hole of a town. I would not recommend going there under any circumstances. Mexicali is the same.

I haven't been to Tijuana in probably 15 years nor do I have any desire to go there in the next 15 years.
