I'm going to Cancun jan 15th ... wish me luck!

As far as I know, Cancun (the resort area) is a remote and isolated piece of Mexico that is fenced off and left alone. So you should be fine. Although I've seen warnings NOT to go beyond the resorts - which kind of sucks since there are so many cool ruins to see. :/

yah i'm not worried at all. i will be about 1500 miles from where all of the drug violence is going on 🙂

Another reason to legalize drugs in the US? I assure you, the drug cartels would fall apart without any funding.

People go b/c the resorts are pretty safe and beautiful. And there's also tons of business opportunities in their growing economy.

I used to have to travel to Mexico City for work. I never had any issues but I know some engineers that were mugged and left in the desert.

A family member spent 6 months in a Mexican prison over a dispute with a local business. He is happy that they only took all of his belongings and beat him a few times while making him sign a humane treatment form with a gun to his head before they gave him over to the us embassy.

This was 6 years ago. Today he would have never been found, buried in some unmarked ditch.

No they just shot you and plant a gun on you...

"It is at least the third case this year in which soldiers, locked in a brutal battle with drug cartels, have been accused of killing innocent civilians and faking evidence in cover-ups."

Dont need to. According to some recent digging my town is now 57% filled with them.
Got an automated message from the city saying there was gonna be massive snow and people need to stay off the road. The FIRST message was in spanish, the 2nd message heard after a long wait was in english.

If I could round them up on buses and transport them back across the boarder I would. But I dont think Senor Obama would approve. And in Northern Virginia this is a hot issue.

I am, for the most part, pretty left leaning. But on this issue, I don't see how there is so much debate. It is plain to see that there is a massive problem with Mexico, and our immigration laws. Not Canada, not Russia, not China... Mexico. Every state should be following suit with Arizona, starting with California.

I have no idea why any American would want to go to Mexico, when you can visit equally sunny, San Diego. You have almost the same amount of Mexicans as in Mexico, but without the fear of incarceration or even death... well at least a very reduced chance of either...

Oh, and hopefully the DREAM Act will be struck down with great vengeance and furious anger.

I am left with regards to marijuana and abortion and certain things with economics.
I am right with gun ownership, illegal immigration, and small government.

I think the immigration issue was the last one I actually gave a shit about. I didnt even care for the first 25 years of my life. I believe abortion was the first issue I cared one way or another about.

Why is that?

Because illegal immigrants don't learn the language that we all (AMERICANS) speak. It pisses you, and quite honestly, probably 99% of Americans off, that when you read a sign anymore, it looks like an eye chart with all the different languages on it. The fact that if you call ANY customer service phone number, the first thing you hear is "press 1 for English, press 2 for Spanish". It sounds stupid, but I think that if everyone were forced to speak and learn English, we would all be that much more unified as one county. Instead, we have a bunch of self-segregated communities, that only seem to keep multiplying.

yeah there's enough warm places in the USA to go to. If I want to get adventurous and leave the country I'll go the Bahamas.

As long as you don't go to any other non-English speaking country in the world and demand they speak English to you, you're entitled to this opinion.

And in the gross majority of the country, you can't get by without a bit of English.

Those ruins and other places of interest are mostly safe as well, just beware of pickpockets and people trying to scam you.
