Team Mopar?s Jorgen Moller set his fifth land speed record last week in a production Dodge SRT4 at the Bonneville Salt Flats. The record-breaking average was set at 221 mph on the five-mile course, establishing the Dodge SRT4 as the fastest four-cylinder production car in the world.

"It is amazing how well the car performed at over 220 mph when you consider that the body, transmission and engine block are exactly the same as the (street version) SRT4," said Moller.
At first, I didn't believe this statement. So I crunched the numbers and figured that -- at 221 mph -- the engine would be spinning at 7900 rpm in 5th gear. Very doable if they're putting down 700-800 hp like they claim. Damn scary for FWD if you ask me though.

The Caliber SRT-4 is not out yet. Rumors say maybe later this fall, but possibly not until next spring. I plan on looking at one at least. The idea of a ~$20k hatch putting down 300+ hp is very appealing to me as a combination commuter/track car, plus I have a brother who works for DCX so I might be able to get it even cheaper.

Probably.. The Cobalt SS / SRT-4 are always doing battle for fastest FWD.

Never really took this standpoint, Not sure why people care.
No other cars put down 230WHP for $20k (new, warranty, etc)
I think the SRT-4 is great.

The standpoint is that it's a neon. People do buy cars based on more than just how much power you can get for cheap.

Agreed! I absolutely love my 03 SXT Neon. It's not a SRT-4 even, but it's fun to drive, very reliable, and I like having the small body. My friends tried to lose me in the city on their bikes for s & g's. Lo' and behold, when they turned around, I was right behind them. :p I don't do any 'spirited' driving, but it was a one-time thing and I had a blast. :)

It's not the most extravagant car inside, but it's a pleasure to drive. I get a lot of complements on it as well. As a cheap-@$$ college student, I don't think I could have chosen a better car for the price.

agreed. im surprised Dodge even made a car like that, but I think it was simply to try and take a cut out of the import tuner crowd. personally i hate import tuners, and thus despise the SRT-4. Dodge is typically muscle, and thus why I am looking forward to the Challenger. oooo that'll be nice.

it's called the ariel atom, and it has a 300 HP supercharged Honda 4-cylinder in a car that weighs significantly LESS than the elise.
