Chimneys only have a small passage through the flue.
It is usually the size of a mail slot and usually only open during a fire (if the owner opens it).
I figured this out when I was like 5. It was my basis for not believing in Santa.

What a moran!

What kind of Chimney was this anyway? Must have been one of the older ones? Mine has a flu that is like 8" across, you couldn't even get into it to get stuck in the first place.

we had a wood stove with a ~10" diameter pipe. (what do you call this type of fireplace/stove..."non-attached?")

I asked my parents how Santa Claus is supposed to get into our fireplace.

They told me that he just knocks on our front door. :\

This is what happens when one's parents are too rational and somewhat apathetic to superstition.

...it bought them a year, at least. I was 5.

i feel sad for the woman that died... the desperation she must have felt in order to lead her down a frigging chimney must have been horrible, but then the panic of having the guy you chased after leave the house and ignore your cries... that's just horrible to think about :(

imagine the claustrophobia and regret she must have felt as she died...

i'm sorry, but the entire time i read the article, all i could think about was it playing out like some tragic indie movie that ends with sadness and regret.

some people are good at not giving a shit about people and laugh about their deaths when it didn't happen in a normal way. i guess i'm a little more empathetic in the sense that i just automatically think about how the person must have been feeling during their final minutes... what must have been going through their heads... it's sad, right? i mean... at least that's how i feel about it when someone dies in a way that isn't peaceful or sudden...

whatever, i'm just gonna stop talking now.

Doctors are people, too. Translation: they're often just as fucked-up as anyone else.

yes, I agree with all that.

...
but I also wonder if this thought crossed her mind: "Damn! that was fucking stupi--"

seriously, I've dealt with enough people dieing for no reason, who had plenty to contribute, who made seemingly great decisions their entire lives, way too young....so all I'm going to do about situations like this is laugh my ass off and not care.

because, well, that's all I got left when a fool fulfills their destiny. my empathy is tapped out.

:\

There was that doctor in western mass who let his kid (under the age of 10 IIRC) fire a fully automatic uzi and the kid shot himself in the head and died due to the kick back.

I'm seeing a trend of really stupid stories involving doctors.

Sorry, I'm with Eits on this one, I just can't laugh at this. I imagine her wedged into the chimney, maybe too constricted to even call for help. She probably couldn't move her arms, so her cell phone was probably on her and ringing, until the battery finally went dead. Just a horrible, horrible way to go.

That doctor and son were at a gun show and the firing of the automatic weapon was under the direct supervision of "experts" who explicitedly posted there was no age limit. Very bad judgment in retrospect, but understandable. The only trend is tragedy involving doctors every couple of years.
