I was thought to always wear an undershirt under a dress shirt when going to the office. Nothing worse than a ring of sweat in a meeting. I wear undershirts (white) with every shirt even t shirts.. well unless I want to a more tailored t shirt fit in the summer.

I'm also picky about my undershirts. They must be a deep V-neck so they don't show and must have a little bit of stretch to them so they don't make my shirt baggier.

And I vary the cotton weight for summer and winter wear.

No. I just never found it comfortable. Plus, not wearing one lets me show off the Hasselhoff-esque chest hair a lot easier! :awe:

Yes always, whether it is 0 degrees out or 100 degrees out. It feels more comfortable and you don't have to worry about accidentally showing skin in the office. Also looks more professional.

Yep, it is basically mandatory if I am wearing a light colored shirt anyway. This is a long sleeve undershirt, btw.

That's the thing... I don't like long-sleeved button-up shirts. They're impractical in the summer as everyone just bunches up the sleeves, and in the winter, they get all manged up by your coat's sleeves. So... fuck 'em! Plus, I work in software, so I get to play to the stereotype.

But yes, that's also why I don't wear light-colored shirts. Plus, if I did wear one at this point, it would send people into shock.

I have actually spent way too much time thinking about this issue. I wear a lot of collared shirts, and not being white I really dislike how much a white shirt shows through the shirt I'm wearing over it.

As a result, I've purchased and wear a bunch of these Tommy John super-thin v-neck undershirts that are skin-coloured. At $40 each, though, it means you're pretty serious about having an invisible undershirt.

yes to undershirts under button-downs... definitely worth the money for nice, comfortable undershirts imho. the soft cotton feels a lot nicer than the fabric of a dress shirt.

most of my undershirts are white v-necks but I also have a few black undershirts that I'll throw into the mix if I'm wearing a dark shirt.

Short sleeved button ups shouldn't exist imo. During the summer roll the sleeves up, it looks much nicer.

When wearing a button up shirt do you wear an undershirt underneath? Either tshirt or wife beater, either one. And is it always white?

I've always wore tshirts as an undershirt, but recently discovered that this is stupid and it feels so much nicer to wear just the buttonup. I don't sweat profusely so that isn't much of a problem, and not having the shirt show through I think looks much nicer. I feel like it's been a revelation! 😀
Yes, always. Even in the summer; in that case it might be a wife beater though.

I guess I'm not sure why... I'd say "so deodorant doesn't leave pit stains on it" but wife beaters don't help with that. Well, one reason is if I'm carrying I like a shirt/fabric between the holster and my skin. Hmmm. Maybe I'll go shirtless underneath a button-up next time. NOW I'M EXCITED TO TRY THIS.

Again, big difference between a casual button-up and a dress shirt. Yes, nobody over 12 years old should wear a short sleeved dress shirt, although they do go well with clipon neckties.

I always do, mainly because of sweat potential. I recently got a couple white hanes cool-dri shirts for the next time I suit up. Too bad they don't make cool-dri v-necks for when I skip the tie, so in that case I will go back to the regular cotton v-neck.

Of course, I have underwear on regardless of my outerwear. T-shirt, dress shirt, anything in between... undershirt. Jeans (I now own one pair!), shorts, dress pants, anything in between... underpants.

I always layer.

Especially with dress shirts. If I sweat I want it on an undershirt where it's my business and not on the dress shirt for everyone to see.

#fatguyproblems
i saw a guy at a workplace giving a presentation with massively wet underarm stains.

in that situation, I think I would have thrown on a sportcoat at least.

WRT the OP, i think a clean white collar t-shirt makes the button-up look better. (i button to 1 below the top button, so there's a little spread)

I just wear normal t-shirts under, then when I get home, just take the button up off and switch to jeans and more casual shoes and it's like any other day. Generally when wearing button up shirts I'm not in environments where sweat/dirt is going to be an issue so that's not a big deal. But kinda depends (nicer job and I'd buy some nicer clothes for it, I'd probably switch to wearing some of the newer sorta spandex like but not that tight athletic shirts that breathe better).

Just match the color of the undershirt with the outer shirt (or at least with white and light colored shirts).

If you're worried about laundry then just check your nicer clothes when you take them off and decide if they really need a wash or not, if not then hang them up and spray them with a deodorizing spray or something to keep them fresh. Less wear and less work.

I actually will probably be needing to buy some new dress shirts and pants before long. Have lost some weight so my older ones don't fit, but my even older ones don't either.
