I haven't since September 1st, I moved into my new flat, and to save money (by not getting a TV License) and I have not looked back, I don't get some of the references my friends now make about random crap that's on TV anymore, but I prefer my life without having watched that shit.

Anyone else?

OK people aren't getting this. When I say live TV I don't mean, something that is being broadcasted live, such as a live news event or a sports event. I mean television programming that is being broadcast at the moment you turn the box on, not stuff that was on half an hour ago that you recorded.

Your post confuses me. It sounds like you don't have TV at all, but your question sounds like it refers to a subset of TV broadcasts. I don't have TV.

What the fuck is a "TV license"?

edit: LOLUK

In the United Kingdom and the Crown Dependencies, any household watching or recording live television transmissions is required to purchase a television licence every year. As of 2010, this costs £145.50 for colour and £49.00 for black and white.[1] The licence is required to receive any live television transmission, whether it is received via terrestrial, satellite, cable, or the Internet

How the fuck do you enforce this fee?

I'm talking about watching live TV (as per the title) I do own a television set, with a DVD player etc. But I do not watch live television.

They have to pay to have a TV in the UK :^D

I'm kind of ambivalent on that regard. First thought, is it's a good idea for taxing a luxury, but it's censorship of communication, that could leave out the poor. TV isn't much of a luxury anymore.

live as in, it's actually happening as it is airing?

or live as in, you watch tv shows as they air (instead of watching it later with a DVR)?

i do both of those though. i watch sports often and quite a few shows as they air.

It's just to fund the BBC. Without TV Licensing we wouldn't have Top Gear, Doctor Who, The Office etc etc etc.

My TV keeps me warm at night (literally - 140W of light, sound, and waste heat) and company all day. TV also raised me, and I tune into "the" or live news when nothing else is on. No, I don't have that much going on:).

When someone says "live TV" here, it refers to real time broadcast, that's only delayed by a few seconds for censorship purposes. I don't have TV at all. I watch a small amount of video on the computer. but use radio for my news and stuff.

I've heard of people going to jail over it.

I've also heard of people who don't even OWN TVs being extorted into paying the fee because the government will make your life hell if you don't.

There are stories about this floating around the interweb. It's pretty crazy.

I just had to notify them that I didn't need one. Otherwise they bombard with letters.

I'm not going to get into an argument about TV licensing but I think it's a really good idea. It means that the BBC doesn't have to show adverts, it also doesn't have to make what is popular it can take risks and make good stuff.

Wait, so you plug your TV into the power outlet and some rabbit ear antenna, and you have to buy a license in the UK to use that?
