Do you view civil service as a prestigious career?

A lot of people seem to look down on civil servants as boring lifeless bureaucrats, but I look at civil service (especially at the federal level) as a great way to actually accomplish something for the good of the country.

Does anyone else share my view?

I don't negatively view civil servants, but I don't view them above anyone else either.

It's about as worthless as most office jobs in the private sector...just paperwork. Someone's got to do it, but it certainly isn't glamourous or irreplaceable.

Yes, it's very presigious.

LOL

Man, I hate to make fun, but I was laughing my ass off............

I'm laughing, too! :D

I was a civil servant. I worked for two years at the big bad IRS handling returns.
I could not stand that job.
Personally, I don't feel anything for a civil servant. It's a job like any other, it's certainly not rocket science. A lot of civil servants do very well, especially if you apply yourself or kiss ass.

And fvck you all...I'm a good speller! ;)

Prestegious ... well, at certain levels certainly ... >= GS15 is nothing to sneeze at.
Civil service can be a rewarding career, but can be kinda dead-end. ALOT of people get stuck at the GS12/GS13 level forever.

I work for local government which I think is better than federal as far as feeling justified.

iirc, grabage man get paid $30+/hr in nyc. I am not sure the real rate, but it is definitely higher than my high school teacher.

I would say very presitigious.

The garbage man is almost certainly not a state or federal employee.
Just a member of a union with mob connections.
