Can't bring my cell phone into work because it has a goddamn camera in it. Thus it's useless as a music player as I still have to carry around my ipod. So here is a scenario where a ridiculous number of features cancel each other out.

I use the LG 8300 for music and pics with 1G MSD card. Before I was a staunch 'phone only' type of person but it comes in handy since I didn't have a portable Mp3 player anyway.

Thank you for your delightful and educated insight into the matter.

That's because Americans aim for small phones, Japanese don't care if the phone's big, they want features. Also, being a large concentration of people being in the larger cities, offering features such as TV over the phone makes more sense. We're starting to get that now with things like VCAST, but it isn't nearly as solid as in the Asian countries.

My phone doesn't play music and I don't care. I needed a phone that 1) worked with my car's bluetooth 2) didn't have a camera. That narrowed my selection from about 500 phones to 2. I went with the Motorola L2.

I had an Ipod Video. Battery barely lasted my one movie.

That's a bit surprising, my PSP lasts long enough to do multiple TV shows or multiple movies and has a bigger screen :Q!

I have the LG 9900 (enV or whatever), and I totally would if I had a bigger microSD card and bluetooth headphones. The interface is pretty decent for it and it syncs with WMP11.

Using your cell phone as a MP3 player is so old school.

I use my phone to watch movies and plot world domination while hacking into broadcasted wifi networks :D

interface on my vx8300 is total sh*t, made for selling their music, usability be damned.
didn't even come with a 2.5->3.5mm converter anyways, pointless junk. most phones "mp3 function" is just there for a marketing checkbox.

I had a sony ericsson 550 which was great as both an fm radio and an mp3 player (only 256 mb, non-upgradeable). The battery life was decent around 3 hours of continuous music or 3 days of talking + radio while commuting (by bike). The swivel design was terrible though. Anytime it swiveled a little, it unlocked the phone which was a major problem and there were no carrying cases that fit it well (even the ones designed for it had issues). The biggest problem however was that I wore out the swivel on two phones in 5 months. After one month, I could feel that the joint was not nearly as tight as it started out and by two months they were nearly falling apart. Neither made it to three months.

Cliffs
I loved the features of the 550
batt time was ok but could be much better
swivel is a poor design and must be handled like a piece of China.
