I ordered the Turtle beach x12 before I found out about the G430 unfortunately.

I did it through Amazon so I am assuming the refund process is painless?

It is expected to come tomorrow. Maximum budget for headset is $50 for me. I heard the surround headsets sacrifice sound quality. Is that true?

Thats up to you, I would rather have the G430's for the Surround. If you don't like the Surround you can always just plug it direct to your sound card

I still don't get surround.

What the difference between surround headsets and razer surround.

Do you have the g430?

The turtlebeach x12 have a lot of reviews and generally have good ratings.

Yes had them both. I picked up the G430's for about $40 bucks a few months back and gave them to my brother. I thought the positional audio sounded pretty damn good.

I think the TurtleBeach x12's were nice but got tired of the hissing and the Mic Monitoring that you can't turn off. I currently use ATH-M50x and a pair of Astro A40's. I didnt think the razer surround worked very well compared to using the G430's.

The surround sound for the G430 is software-based, like razer surround. The G430s come with a USB sound card and that is what does the surround sound. It has a standard 3.5mm connection so you can connect any headphones to it. The G430 headphones are just ordinary stereo headphones basically.

The JVC RX700 and RX900 sound almost as good as my Custom Ones, DT 770 Pros, AD700, AD900 and M50s, and they cost like $40 and $60. Gaming headsets are really overrated. The only set I kinda liked was the Razer Caracas, and that had more to do with comfort than sound. Very cheap build quality though. Anyways, spending $50 on headphones made by a company that knows how to make headphones goes further than gaming headsets that cost almost twice as much.

Again it depends on the brand in question. Triton and turtle beach? Yeah kind of lower quality.

The G430's for sure.
Thinking of picking up a Logitech G230

Yeah those are nice also. I think they are the same thing as the G430's except a different color and without the USB Sound Card for Surround. How much you paying for them? I think you can get the G430's for around $40-$50 bucks.

The point is you pay a premium for it and get a worse product overall. Open backed headphones provide the same experience, and far better build and audio quality.

You don't have to sacrifice anything though. A good sound card will have a head phone amp and also provide good surround processing. Combine that with a good set of cans and you got the best of both worlds with no sacrifice. I personally like the surround processing.

All surround processing I have heard sounds tinny, and higher pitched.

I"m thinking about picking up some skullcandy plyr1 (wireless) or slyr (wired). My main concern with the wireless is can I use them like regular headphones and directly plug them into a 3.5mm jack on a phone or whatever? I've never had wireless headphones before so I don't know if this is something they have standard.

They are only like 5 bucks less than the 430's so I might just get the 430's. Historically I haven't been a fan of virtual surround, I like true stereo. I mix my own music and so forth and tend to dislike any kind of filter that changes the entire audio track. But maybe this virtual surround stuff has gotten better. What is your experience on the virtual surround vs. true stereo on the Logi's?

my ad 700s are perfect. a good quality stereo open headphones are perfect for anything. if you want better get a full surround speaker system. that would cost 1000

Yeah for $5 bucks your better off with the g430's as at least you will have the option for the 7.1 surround.

I think the Virtual Surround sounds great imo.

I sometimes wear glasses but more often than not I am using contacts. I too have comfort issues with glasses on and some headsets and headphones. There are some that aren't too bad though.

I use my $200 Beyerdynamic headphones and an $8 no-name microphone which I tucked away behind my monitor.

Never heard (ha!) of any complaints. Has the added benefit that I can wear my headphones elsewhere without looking like a dork.

Picked up a 430 over the weekend. Was thinking about it about a month ago when they were on an even bigger sale but luckily they went on sale again after mine broke. Listening to TV the sound is very good. If the side muffs maintain their structure, they position firmly off your head and you don't even need the headband to be seated tight.
