Do you use filters and labels in your Gmail account?

Yes.

I have a lot of proxy email account, which I then forward to my one main account. That account filters and labels them. I also filter and label emails from certain people, such as all school related emails or all work related emails.

Filters are also useful if you still want to receive certain emails but you don't want them in your inbox, i.e. newsletters, ads, and such.

Once I'm finished with everything related to an email, I archive it. Thus the only emails in my Inbox are active items. It would take more time than I would gain to sort and label.

But filters Auto label or move or whatnot for you before you even see the email thus not costing you any time at all.

of course, how else would you sort your email?

I've got about 15 labels and about as many filters.

I don't get why you'd want to sort your email. What's the point?

for ease of finding. I use labels and filters on gmail the same way I use folders and rules on outlook (and believe me, I do get hundreds upon hundreds of emails every day at work, the vast majority of which I don't read but need to keep archived)

also, there are a lot of emails I don't read right away (ie: I have one specific filter setup for when I email myself things at work to watch/read at home) and I'm a little OCD about keeping my inbox as clear as possible. I don't like anything in there but "active" issues/conversations or as reminders (ie: I have an old email from garmin to remind me to update my gps map someday)

I'm the same. I hate having more than 3 or 4 active threads in my inbox

Actually no, for some reason I'm generally slow to figure these things out and adopt things that will make my life easier.

I should probably look into these features..

this.

funny, b/c that was the main advertisement for gmail when it was first made available. "Unlimited space, Google search, no more need to delete or sort!"

the more I think about creating new folders and sorting my gmail like I do with other email accounts, the more I remember that searching through gmail has always been easy and quick.

I hadn't used them extensively, had one filter and a handful of labels I applied to emails as they came in.
But recently started trying to really maximize the efficiency. I now have quite a few filters and added another label, color coded, but the big thing I did was auto archive certain types of email, and apply the label, so all new emails with certain labels appear only under that label, so in effect getting multiple inboxes or at least multiple folders with email going straight to those.
I get my school email account's email in my gmail account, so I could just have all my mail in one location. This has helped organize that mail even better, and I know when I get labels still in the inbox its going to be a pretty important email based on the sender.

That, and I've been moving to really integrate/maximize efficiency with Gcal, the end goal making it easy to get to and see exactly what I need whenever I'm at my desktop or on my WinMo phone.

Labels and folders are two different things though. You can attach multiple labels to things. Most of my labels are done automatically and colorcoded. The really important stuff are red so if I see it i know it's urgent
