I have my phone with me pretty much 24/7 - on my desk in my home office, in my pocket while in the living room/kitchen, and on the nightstand in bed. My wife is also a techie but she does like you, OP, and puts her phone down when she gets home. Sometimes you just look stuff up or think of something and need to text someone and I like having it with me. OP, don't you have a laptop/tablet for that sort of thing? So having that instead would be the same thing if it's within reach.

Anyway, as for an alarm, I always use my phone, but I unfortunately wake automatically at about 6 hrs. No matter what I try to prolong sleep and no matter how I shift my hours earlier or later. Fitbit tells me it's always between 5:47hrs or 6:10hrs. Another advantage to using the phone is it's easy to change the time depending on my schedule. No need to remember right at bedside to do so. Power outages are also another negative of alarm clocks. I have my phone on the charger at bedtime if needed.

My vote for the best invention ever was the clock radio that you could set the alarm to only go off on weekdays. I don't know why it took so long to invent that....I have it set to turn on to a radio station.

Only minor gripe is that it turns on weekday holidays. I wonder if Alexa has something that can do an alarm/wake to music just on non-holiday weekdays....

I am a techie too as I'm a software engineer. And yes I use my laptop at home when I need to do anything requiring the internet or something. Any time I try to do something "real" on a smart phone, I could do it like 10x faster on a computer.

Generally speaking I rarely use my phone, and I hate that everyone uses their phone so much. If I didn't do mobile development I probably wouldn't even have a smart phone or at least anything near current. I've only ever had 3 smart phones, iPhone 4, then 6, and now X. Although, Google Maps has kind of changed the way we use/need directions now, so I do use that often when needing new directions or want to see traffic.

I do use an alarm clock but i always wake up a minute or 2 before it goes off. You just never know if you sleep in. My pussy workmates will be dressed in 3 layers of clothing and balaclavas over their faces...come on man.

Usually my phone gets put on my nightstand when I get home and stays there until I leave for work. It's a glorified camera/text machine/alarm clock.

Do not disturb mode is your friend. You can even have it automatically turn on at night.

I'm late 20s and I use my phone for an alarm and have since I was a teenager (pretty sure flip phones had alarms in them)?! Everyone my age that I know uses their phones as well.
Different generation. I also wear a watch because I work with my hands. I don't need a smart phone but, I have one because my youngest daughter thinks I need one and bought it for me.

I used to beat my alarm up, but I've been staying up later solely for the ability to sit by the fire, which I enjoy. Last night I passed out in the chair, woke up at 12:30, took a shower which wired me out, and had trouble getting back to sleep. Overslept this morning, and got to work .5hr late. Not a big deal, but sub optimal.

I'm on Reddit while on the can like nobody's business, but mine of course. On my 3rd phone, since they're overly expensive. Nexus, Note 3, S8+.
