I have my phone with me pretty much 24/7 - on my desk in my home office, in my pocket while in the living room/kitchen, and on the nightstand in bed. My wife is also a techie but she does like you, OP, and puts her phone down when she gets home. Sometimes you just look stuff up or think of something and need to text someone and I like having it with me. OP, don't you have a laptop/tablet for that sort of thing? So having that instead would be the same thing if it's within reach.
Anyway, as for an alarm, I always use my phone, but I unfortunately wake automatically at about 6 hrs. No matter what I try to prolong sleep and no matter how I shift my hours earlier or later. Fitbit tells me it's always between 5:47hrs or 6:10hrs. Another advantage to using the phone is it's easy to change the time depending on my schedule. No need to remember right at bedside to do so. Power outages are also another negative of alarm clocks. I have my phone on the charger at bedtime if needed.
