Do you use a Surge protector or UPS or nither??? *poll*

Of course I use them, I think it is rather ignorant not to have one unless you can't. But I am not gonna act like a hypocrite cause at one time did not have one for a couple months cause I wanted to find one I liked and I did I was using those cheapo ones on my currant rig(Don't kill me lol). I found a nice APC 3500Jp which has been really good. Yea, It was $50 bucks but I got a nice discount on it from a friend.

Now who uses surge protectors here or a UPS?

Here are a few tips for some people...

I am acutally gonna buy a UPS cause I don't think a surge protector by itself it good enough. When washing machine is on, my light surges a little bit but you have to stare at it and that light is plugged into that protector. To me that is the way I test out surge protectors. I plugged a cheapo one into a light it and was surging like mad on that one it was nutz.

Another good thing about having a UPS is 2 things. If you get a thunder storm and your house gets hit, it will go to the backup instead and burn that out. And if you use are working on things it is good to have power when your power goes out, so you can save and shutdown safely. Now remember when you go out to get a surge protector look for a good brand with a high Joule rating or Jp. And make sure the specs say it too.

Cause I have seen ones that say 3000Jp and on the side it says 2440Jp of protection, I was like whoa false avertising heh.

I believe if you read the documentation that comes with your UPS, they say to not daisy chain surge protectors and UPSs. I know the stuff that came with my APC unit did. After all, in addition to being a battery backup, most, if not all, UPSs come with a surge protector built in.

You void any connected equipment warranties when you daisy chain surge protectors/UPSs...

Your pollage is NG.

Yes! All my gear is hooked up to a Belkin 1200.

During lightning strikes everything is shut down. Being protected by a UPS or surge protector is not going to cut-it for a near strike.

Tips: Do not plug a surge protector into the UPS. Plug a low wattage desk lamp into the
UPS to keep the room lighted in the event of a black-out.

And by the way, I was not talking about daisy chaining, when I ment both, I ment a ups on your pc and monitor and a surge protector on everything else. (sound system, external Hd's, modems, routers, etc.)

I use a UPS for quick power drops. But not enough outlets on the UPS so I run a surge protector from the UPS.

UPS for PC and Monitor... everything else is on various surge protectors.

P.S.
The warm glow of my monitor is the only light I need in case of a blackout. Speaking of which, since I moved away from Florida*, I hardly ever have blackouts... but I'm moving back to Florida soon, so it's a good thing I still have my UPS.

*Florida is the lightning capital of the US

I have had 3 routers and 2 nics and many cable modems destroyed by power surges, or something, coming in from the incoming cable connection - I have been forced to invest in a Belkin F9H702-06 (Compusa 319875) surge protector - a reasonably priced product. Living in Florida, I have never had a problem with power surges thru power lines.

The reason for the 25watt night light is that my 22" Mit draws quite a bit of juice. It's plugged into the UPS but kills the battery run time. W/CRT my run time is 15 minuets. But w/o the CRT the rig can run close to 2 hours. With my night light I can turn off the CRT and still download, up-load or save whatever I was doing.

Just paranoid I guess 😉

I use both. Tampa Bay, FL has alot of lightning storms throughout most of the year and it pays to be extra secure.

I used to use UPS's. When the battery goes, the replacements are expensive. I'm switching to high quality surge protectors.

i took an old one I had and I use it with my TV and DISH receiver..great for when the power is flickering or goes off

it's about the most important thing to add to a PC, a UPS is
