I bet those doctors work in a ****** neighborhood (probably non white)

yeah...why the hell would you want to?

well, by the logic that your tipping allows you to get the best possible, and cheapest, service, i would have thought your health would be the most important to you, hence the doctor the most important person to tip...by the same token, i'd be tipping my accountant too ;)

Thats not the way it works here. If you lived here and worked here then you would understand.

It really depends. Some inner city physicians do alright as they work at pretty large hospitals. Take an ER doc making 170-200k a year, sure, sounds pretty decent, but then realize it's a guy who may very well have spent the last 15+ years of his life taking loans to pay for school. Now he's gotta pay 'em off and in addition he's responsible for human life and not allowed to make mistakes. I wouldn't be opposed to upping a salary for some of those folks.

Sure, some physicians make pretty decent money (i.e. those in a successful group practice in a decent specially in an afluent area), but I really think a lot may not get their due.

No. I don't think a tip would include the quality of care (or lack of) that I get from him anyways.

There are areas where a tip affects service and is pretty much expected after good service, and there are areas where they don't make any difference at all.

I think that difference has to do with the base pay of the service provider.

I don't know any doctors who are going to miss their next rent payment if they don't get any tips this month. Instead they try and do a good job for EVERYONE in order to build the good reputation that will ultimately earn them more money by far than tips ever would.

I remember a quote something like tipping is the price that one American is willing to pay to induce another American to acknowledge inferiority.

Or as a thank you/incentive for a job well done? I've tipped some waitresses up to 100% of the bill just because I thought their services was fantastic, and I in no way feel superior to them. I have my own job, they have theirs. It's just the way it is.

Just remember, it's your health. An x-ray shouldn't matter. Also, us doctors have to pay for our student loans.

They do in some countries. In Japan for example, you would give reikin (thank you money) of up to a couple thousand dollars to a doctor after surgery or if they were a highly sought after specialist.

Personally, if I'm not going back again, I'm not gonna be too inclined to give a $2000 tip.

Maybe if you didn't need any aftercare.

You also pay reikin (a couple months rent, seperate from the security deposit) to landlords for letting you "rent" their apartment.

Agreed. In China it works like that with most things (noticed this summer). In Czech it's similar as well however I'd call it more of a bribe than a tip.

You tip people who DON'T.

by that logic, you are supposed to tip fast food restaurant workers?

no, as they make minimum wage. servers make less than half minimum wage in most cases
