Oh, if you say its a "cover up for laziness" you have no idea what you are talking about. Stop trying to act all high and mighty.

sorry to hear that Roger, glad the meds help at least...

but i do agree that ADD is highly overdiagnosed....it seems like 50% of the kids now-a-days are taking medicine for one type of mental illness or another.

Once again the people in this thread who have stated that there is no such thing as ADD or ADHD are talking out there ass and have no idea what the hell they are talking about.

My boy has ADHD which has been confirmed with multiple cat and MRI scans, his attention span is a whole 30 seconds no matter what he is at the moment doing and don't give me that sh!t about poor parenting.

Without medication, he cannot function in society or even within the family setting, with the medication (Aderall) he can at least have concentration enough to function some what normally.

If you do not know what you are talking about, you should not make any comments.
Many consider it overdiagnosed, though regardless it does help some kids concentrate. Is your son able to concentrate on anything for long periods, like a video game?

I can concentrate on video games, but I sure as hell can't concentrate while sitting at a meeting, or taking a test, or even sometimes while watching TV.
Self-discipline. I lack it too sometimes. I surf AT habitually because I'd rather do it than boring crap, but sometimes I do find myself in a good little work zone and will go at it, skipping food, until I'm finished. That's why I know I don't have ADD. I just lack the discipline often to apply myself to something I find boring.

I've gotten better over time, but I still find my mind wandering quite a bit. When I was younger I could not focus worth a damn on anything but video games, or things that actually interested me. I always had to be fiddling with something, doodling, or daydreaming.

I THINK what some people here are trying to say is that an ADD or ADHD label is slapped on a child too quickly. This is not to say that there are no true cases of them. These days any child that exibits the slightest disinterest or acts out in school atuomatically gets check for these. Many times I'm sure (no professional am I) there are other ways other than meds that would correct the issues.

Agreed. It's sad that its become so fashionable to trash physicians and ADD as "over-diagnosed" and "not a real disorder". It's obvious that most of these posters have never experienced a person with ADD. When medication is properly prescribed, the difference is night and day and certainly can't be dismissed.

Whoever claimed that no females are diagnosed with ADD is completely off base. The ratio is certainly higher for males, something like 5 to 1 but there are clearly females with ADD.

Nah but I've always thought I have a mild depression. Nothing I havent been able to try to work through, but I've always been a firm believer that you can work through anything.

Well it's obvious that someone like Roger's kid has a real disorder, but he is a minority. I've known many people that were diagnosed with ADD and not a ONE of them has a significant problem like Roger's kid. Even myself. I was medicated for ADD as a child and as I've gotten older I realize that there really wasn't a damn thing wrong with me.

I was tested for it multiple times in elementary school. I knew exactly what they were doing, so I made sure not to screw up. I didn't want to be with the "slow kids". I might have it, might not, either way I don't care.

Have it or not, I'm doing just fine now. I wouldn't want to hide behind some BS excuse like that because when I get a full-time job, a company isn't going to cut me slack for it.

I'm not certain if I have it or not. Years ago while in college there was a short time period of less than a year when I had my doctor prescribe me Ritalin and he also had me try Concerta in order to see if either would assist me in concentrating better. Although, I did find that Concerta was able to allow me to concentrate more readily I also found that while on it I was not as prone to socialize. If I were to have to describe it I would almost say it made me feel as though I was trapped within my own thoughts. I would often find myself in social situations where I would think about saying this or that but instead of simply saying what was on my mind or contributing to conversations I would just keep quite and not say anything. It was kind of cool in the sense that it gave me the opportunity to really observe others but I'm glad that I no longer subscribe to the idea that I need to be drugged my entire life in order to be a respectable member of society.

I'm sorry if I came off harsh in my last post, but it is not easy dealing with this disorder, it pains me greatly on a daily basis watching him struggle through life, it is unbearable sometimes watching him being picked on by other children, they label him as a stupid moron and that really pisses me off.

It is a daily struggle with school work, homework and dealing with the other problems he has encountered from this disorder. (no friends, emotional angst)

Thanks to all for those good words :)

I try to read threads in their entirety if they are interesting, which is why you've never caught me in a Skoorb effect. Unless I'm in a hurry and I just have a quick blurb to add or counter a specific post, and/or the thread is long and boring.

Plus when I see one of those "find your way out of this room" puzzles I like to figure it out and won't put it off till later.

I'm the same way. It's called Obsessive Compulsive.

I can only imagine how difficult it could be for him and yourself.

Hopefully, he will find his way to cope with this whether it be with medication or not and he will not have this interfere with his daily life.

Good luck to you both.

Does your boy consume a lot of foods containing coloring? Studies have linked symptoms of ADD to food dye allergies.

Segalore, I know what caused this ailment/disease, I do not want to discuss this subject openly on this BBS.

Not even if it could help someone else prevent it from happening to them?

According to my doc and my psychologist I do, though I wasn't really sure (more of an adult onset case.) I've been taking Strattera for a few weeks now and it has made a difference.

I'm sure if everyone took Strattera for a few weeks it would make some kind of difference. :p that's how mind drugs work...
