Do you think that in 2 years nVidia will use the 9800 and 9600 names? I mean the Radeon's used those names, and yes I know they have 7XXX cards but the 9XXX were the real famous ones?

I think the bigger question is, do you think that in 5-6 years, Nvidia will use the X800 and X600 names? :D

well it would make logical sense, but if they want to avoid confusion then they might change to a new naming nomenclature. I'm actually wondering what ATI will be naming the R520, R530, and R515, given that they didn't leave themselves much room after the X850, and they probably don't want the confusion of naming something like the R530 which probably will perform better than at least some of the X800 cards below the X800.

The way ATI are naming their cards I wouldn't be surprised (well I would, but still) if they named their whole lineup:

high:
X950XTPE
x950XT
X950Pro

med:
x900XTPE
X900XT
X900XL
X900GT

low:
x900GTO
X900pro
X900
X900SE

i think this is the best guess to make at the moment....lol i wonder what they would name their r6xx generation...they may have to drop the radeon name...

Hopefully, in a few years we won't need video cards because we will be able to hook our gear up directly to our noggin and use our brain as a GPU and optic nerves / eyes as a display device. :lol

well you are all forgetting about the 'X'

no one said that the numbers have to start with 'X'

maybe

Z600
Z600pro
Z600xl
Z600xt
Z600XTPE

etc etc etc

just a suggestion

X=10

The 10XXX series was the sucessor of the 9XXX series. Naming it Z would kill it. I have never called the x800 EX-Eight-Hundred, I always Called it Ten-Eight-Hundred.

its already happened... If you guys remember ati did have the 7xxx series. However, they had 7500 and 7000 so none of this interferes yet. Haha, but with the 8600 they may have some colliding.

I miss the good ole days when it would just be like Geforce 3, it was just so much easier to say and it sounded cooler.

WHOA, news flash for me...I've been saying it wrong all this time? I mean, I knew the X was a roman numeral indicator, but I didn't know they acually wanted us to pronounce it like that. Damn... I think everything, Geforce, Radeon, Pentium, and Athlon have had it. If the Pentium 5 ever makes it production, shoot me. Same goes for Athlon128. (Knowing AMD, they'll claim its the next big thing.)

I hope not... I might have to run at lower resolutions (or without AA/AF) to get the same FPS as the smart kids... :p

X was the sucessor because 9 was all used up and there is no DirectX 10 yet.
Also because X's are cool and ATI had to jump on the bandwagon.

ATI needs fewer flavors of their cards. This would be better:

high:

x950XT
x950

med:

X900XT
X900XL

low:
x900GT
X900pro

I just got an idea: maybe all of these ATI delays are because they haven't thought of a name for their new lineup yet!!! ;) .

LOL, that made me laugh the first time i saw it...but i really doubt that ati would confuse the public (public, not us) with the naming again...the reason they did it with the x800 series is because the x300 and the x600 were a complete failure even though they were supposed to be the "mid/low end".

Here's a great suggestion...just call it the R520 or better yet, they make like FUDO XL, FUDO XT, FUDO PRO, lol

They'll just drop the current numbering system for something else. They didn't have it before, there's no need to keep it as is forever.

Random Speculation but it was announced MS has been prepping to release SM 4.0 information, a.k.a DX10. Think that could be a cause for the delay is they're making fudo fit the DX10 so they have at least one leg up on nvidia?

I believe everyone calls it Ex-800 actually.

It is my understanding that there will never be a DX10, all of the specifications will now be in WGF, not DX. (i could be way off base, but thats the way in interpreted WGF1.0, 2.0, etc.

Definitely "Ex-Eight-Hundred"...

Ten-Eight-Hundred... what were you thinking?! :p

Maybe we'll see the XX series, followed by the XXX series. I'm sure sales would increase dramatically. Just imagine the cover art for Ruby! LOL!

Nvidia would have to counter with the GeForce D, and SLI could be referred to as Double-D.

Damn! I should be in marketing!
