Well no over lap will really happen for Nvidia and ATI till the Geforce 9 Series, as Nvidia is not necessarily gonna use 7500/7200/7000 this generation.

Why does ATI even have to use the numbering and Radeon name? They made a switch before(Rage to Radeon), they can do it again, starting at 1.
